Title: Time to avoid comparison sites?
Post by: Technical Ben on Jul 05, 2016, 18:55:17
Just got an interesting call. You know, those ppi, gas/electric or phone supply calls? The polite ones and not those "Microsoft your computer is broken" ones?

So I know it's a caller trying to sell me something in a less than polite and honest manner. But they are likely not trying to literally steal anything from me. Except it's another one of the hundreds of "you had a car accident 2 years ago" calls. Which I'm fed up of, but doing my best to stay polite.

So this time I thought I'd try and turn the tables and confidence trick them back.
After a little greeting I thanked them for calling, and asked what info they had and how they got it. As said, this is probably a legitimate company, but they are nuisance calling to get their sales quota. Possibly being less than honest as to who they are, you know the drill "we are here to help, we are your claims negotiators (but not actually your insurance company, we just decided to knock on your door/call/email)."

They let slip that they get the info from comparison sites. Ah, clever one that. Put themselves up as an insurance company, and get sent tons of data voluntarily. Well, I'll skip and go strait to the source from now on. I kind of know a way to check for "leaks" as some do on this forum already, giving temporary email addresses.

Perhaps one like "didyoustealthisfromgocompair@yahoo" or "oiyoustopcallingme@idnet?"  :thumb:  ;)

I don't think I've ever used a comparison site.  http://10minutemail.com/ is good for a throwaway email address.  :)
