I was considering migrating to IDNet. However, I'm currently connected to an exchange about 5 miles away when there is another exchange a mere 0.5 mile or so. I cannot convince BT to change it because they only provide a phone-line, for which my current exchange is adequate. They will only consider it if my current Broadband provider contacted them directly and made a request. However, my current broadband provider refuses to contact them and denies responsibility because the exchange is BT's. Does anyone know if IDNet would make this demand of BT, and whether it would be successful?
All the best,
Jamie Brown
I don't know for sure, Jamie, but based on other cases I would not expect BT to re-route the cabling unless you are willing to pay for it.
I'll try and get a definitive answer.
Thanks! I look forward to hearing back from you...all the best, Jamie
AAMOI, Jamie, who told you that BT would do this if your ISP requested it?
BT's customer service said they would only consider it if they had a request to their broadband wholesale team - i.e. it was the only way they dealt with broadband queries about broadband they were not supplying. They did not say they would definitely accept it though.
My instincts say you were being fobbed off, Jamie, but I could be wrong and BT might be more accommodating than they used to be. I'll see what I can find out. (Probably not today...)
Where are my manners? Welcome to the forum. :)
Hi Jamie
I've had confirmation from Simon that this is not a request that IDNet can make. There is no universal service obligation on BT to provide ADSL, so if the line works OK for voice (and I believe has a dial-up speed of 28.8k or better) then they will not undertake any extra work. I'm sure you could get them to re-route you if you were prepared to pay the cost, but we're talking tens of thousands of pounds. :(
Sorry.
Hey...thanks so much for your help and speedy responses. Shame it's not a better outcome! Funnily enough, I'm not prepared to pay the costs myself!! All the best, Jamie
I don't blame you. :)
I wonder what the position/cost would be if he asked for a second line to be installed?? And could he make it conditional on it being connected to the nearest exchange?
Once the new line was in, he could then stop the old one!! >:D >:D
:evilb:
edit; Welcome to the forum Jamie. ;D
Interesting idea, Mo. I don't know whether BT would accept the order on those terms, but I'd be inclined to try if it was my line. Of course, BT would probably argue that the existing exchange was the nearest in cabling terms. :(
