Title: Images not loading
Post by: daveygravey on Jul 30, 2007, 11:10:51
Hi Guys :)

I'm now an IDNet customer :D

Anyway my brother has just connected to the internet using our IDNet login info... all is well BUT we're having some problems regarding image loading on certain webpages (namely auto trader) - at work the images load up fine but when I pass the same page url on to my brother the images dont load up (car thumbnails). This is a problem we had with our last ISP, we've tried 2 different routers and still have the same problem?

I've done a bit of reading and 'proxy servers' keeps popping up...

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Dave P

Hi Dave

Steve shouldn't be looking at cars.  :P

My first thought is a DNS problem, how have you got DNS servers set up in the router? (Also your IP address - both should be set to obtain addresses automatically.)

If DNS is OK, then my next stop would be MTU/RWIN.

Cheers Rik,

I'm just getting him to sign up to these forums then he can post the relevant info :)

Good move, Dave - I'll keep an eye out for him.

If you want to double-check the DNS issue, you can switch the router to use OpenDNS with the servers at:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Late in the day, Dave, but could this simply be the router problem we discussed? I have no problems with images from the AutoTrader site using the IDNet DNS and a Netgear DG834G.

We've tried it both with the Linksys WAG54G and the 3com office connect - both with the same results

Have you tried changing the DNS setting?

I think ste's just in the process of setting up his new email address, then he'll be on here with more details... kinda wish I was at home! :)

Hello fellas :)

Im just going to give those DNS servers a go Rik. I'll let you know how I get on.

I also changed the DNS and IP settings on the router to auto. It didn't solve the image loading problem though

Thanks for your help  ;)

If it's not DNS, Steve, my next thought would be MTU/RWIN. Do you know what settings you are using?

If you can just get Dan to join us, that's virtually the whole family in membership...  ;)

I tried the IDNet DNS Rik, the images are still not loading properly  >:(

MTU is set at 1500 but I cannot find an RWIN setting on our router I'm afraid

We could get Dan to join, he just needs some problems to solve! I think he leeches his neighbours wireless anyway, much easier that way  ::)

Hi Daveygravey,

Is it just certain sites/pages or all of them ?

This may sound obvious but may be worth checking out as I have the same situation where it doesn't load the pictures on some web pages because my browser is set so that you have to click to say OK to use Active-X controls (it's a narrow strip just under the URL window on the browser and is easily overlooked). As I'm at work at the moment I'm restricted to what settings I can change but I'll try and have a look when I get home at the settings I've got on my home machine.

There is an option under 'advanced settings' in IE to prevent downloading of images but I would imagine this blocks all images.

Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree (or if I'm just 'barking' ;D).

Hi Steve

RWIN is purely a Windows setting, use something like TCPOptimizer to find what you are currently set at, and that router and Windows are using the same value.

It would be nice to get Dan in, we could explain the error of his ways to him. :)

As most people know on here, I know very little about computers, even less about Routers/Modems, but a thought has crossed my mind.

Which browser are you using? IE6 or 7, Firefox, Opera etc.

Does the same thing happen with all?

If that is a stupid thing to suggest, please ignore. ;)

Certainly Auto Trader works 100% on Firefox and Opera on my set up.

Good point, Inactive. :) I'm guessing that Dave & Steve arrived with IDNet today, and that the problem has only arisen since the migration, hence my focus. If my assumption is wrong, though, all bets are off and checking browser performance is a useful diagnostic.

Hi Guys, I'm pretty sure it's not browser specific, I use firefox, but, have tested it with IE as well - the same problem occurs. Also we had this problem prior to our migration (naively we put this down to our previous isp)

I'm at work ATM so I cant really do much from here, I'm gonna try all suggestions when I get home!

Rik just had a look in dixons for the Netgear DG834G - £89.99 lol /always the optimist!

Hi Dave

£19.99 for the Netgear seems a better price:
http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/index.asp?

My thinking is still with MTU not being the same in Windows and the router, so I think that's the first thing to check, adjusting RWIN to suit.

If that isn't it, having eliminated DNS as a possibility, then it would be worth looking at what software is running, particularly anti-virus etc.

I can give you a ring this evening if you like - I tried to catch Steve, but he's just gone to work.

As per this (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,3239.msg46619.html#msg46619)?

Definitely not for me.

Gyms make me groan. I spent most of my school days avoiding them, the idea of paying to go to one seems quite foreign to me.  :o

AHA! Dave had a mess about on the net when he got in from work, on his pc, and everything seemed fine. There were still problems loading images on my pc, however  :(.

Anyway, he thought it must have to be McAfee Antivirus that was messing things up, so when I got in from work this evening I uninstalled it (my 12 month virus definition subscription was up anyway).

Sure enough, everything seems fine now and the image loading problem is fixed. I recall Dave having problems with the autotrader website/images on his PC though, maybe that was actually down to the isp /shrug. 2 stones 1 bird, perhaps :D.

Thanks for all of the help  :)

Hmmm, McAfee (or it may have been Norton Internet Security, I hate both of them with a vengeance) was blocking an image from a website I was working on for a client. Why? because I had called the image banner.jpg  grrrrrrr. So some of these "security" suites just hide graphics wily-nilly based on name, I've seen others hide images just because they were a certain size. This is really pants in my opinion.

Rob.
