Well my mate was asking where he could get a DV (IEEE1394) to USB cable and i don't know where.. do any of you guys know?

Hi Paul,
I am not sure such a thing exists, I thought they were two different formats.
The IEEE1394 better known as Firewire is mainly used for downloading from Camcorders and needs a Firewire port on the computer to be used as such, as far as I am aware.
My computer has a 4 pin and 6 pin Firewire connection on the front, both smaller than USB.
Hope this may help.
I agree, Inactive, I would expect to need some sort of converter and a quick trawl through the Maplin site failed to pick up any such leads/devices.
Thank goodness for that Rik, I wasn't 100% sure. ;)
One other thing I forgot to mention, many, but not all standalone, DVD Recorders also have a Firewire Port, so it is possible to save to DVD without a computer, however it obviously isn't possible to do any editing via this method.
Trouble is, he doesnt have a firewire port so was looking at other methods.. How much are firewire cards? Also tbh.. i dont think he will get a card as he wont want to keep moving his pc just to plug it in.

Firewire cards are not very much, however as you rightly say, they are fitted internally so will end up at the rear of the computer, which isn't very convenient.
Only cures that I know of is to try and find a slot in adapter that may fit in an empty front bay, or a new computer with Firewire ready fitted to the front.
This was a priority requirement when I purchased my computer.

But it is a bit more than just a lead, there must be some highly complex technology in that lead. ;)

I know it looks like a USB port but no USB leads work from it..
If it is then i will go take alook at his machine and make sure he hasnt got one before he buys something..

It looks like a USB port, it says it's a USB port, so my guess is that it hasn't been connected (not uncommon with front-mounted ports - does the card reader work OK?).
The Firewire ports on my machines are marked 1394 or Firewire.

Indeed, the largest Firewire port has a u shaped end, the smaller one is about a quarter of an inch across, so tiny.

Card reader works fine.. Well it reads my SD cards fine.
Well looks like i dont have firewire ports aswell.. lucky the camcorder i baught is a HDD one and came with a usb lead ;D
My mate will just have to get a pci card and leave the DV lead connected to the back if he dont want to keep moving the pc.
If he has any case-mounted sockets, he may be able to connect them to a header on the card - otherwise, a permanent cable will do just fine.
well my mate is an idiot lol.. He bought a pci card.. i went around to fit it, looked at the back of his pc and he had a port marked 1394 lol..
