http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/24/ios-8-0-1-issues-possible-fix/ Seems like 8.0.1 has been pulled from OTA update and iTunes now
If you update through iTunes, that would automatically effect a restore, wouldn't it?

Its been pulled now so thats not an option either for iPhone 6 users, not good. Seems like people that updated though iTunes were ok. Guess Apple have some humble pie to eat now...
Oh dear! :shake:
Odd I've just managed to download it, however I think I leave it alone as I've no access to iTunes this week.
It appears that option-clicking on an iOS 8 file in iTunes will allow users to fix the issue without a restore. iMore has outlined the process:
1. Download iOS 8 for iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus
2. Option (Mac) or Control (Windows) click on Update.
3. Choose the iOS 8 firmware file you downloaded in step 1.
4. Let iTunes do its thing
How is that different from doing the whole upgrade in iTunes, I wonder?
It's certainly a method you can use to manually select a firmware ie go back to a previous one if it's available on the computer.
That's a bloody good point, Steve, which I have never considered. So, if you download the iOS without actually upgrading the device at the same time, the download would be stored on your PC somewhere? That would be really useful for people who, say, have upgraded their 4S's but have issues, providing they had a saved copy of iOS7. It's always been the case, as far as I've understood, that there's no way back to an old iOS.
It's not quite as simple at that I believe, if I recall correctly you can only go backwards for a short time after the release of a new firmware. There's a communication with Apple servers to circumvent for out of date firmwares ie software used as part of the jailbreak process.

that's right Steve. Apple stop signing the old iOS ipsw after a while.
I used to use a program called Tiny Umbrella on the Mac it would save the shsh blobs and redirect the update file verification request from iTunes.
I'm now back to ios8 on my iPhone 6 and thankfully everything is working again.
