Title: Download speed has dropped
Post by: Ronin on Sep 16, 2014, 21:53:19
Hi all , i am not sure when this changed but, i was getting 19MB down for years,
but for the last few weeks its not gone above 14.3 almost as if its capped.

Its a new router and nothing else has changed .

Like i said i am not sure when the speed dropped but for the last 2 weeks its dropped to 14.3

Any clue chaps ?

The current sync rate showing is not far off the max available, plus with the margin of 2.9 I don't think from those that you've been capped. Has your downstream attenuation changed over time or increased with the new router? Just wondering if your line has deteriorated a little or the new router is not as efficient as your previous.

Its a new TD-W8968 - TP-Link i dont think its the cause, i had tested the download speed when i had bought it and it was normal, the prevous router was an old sky router with a rom installed  >:D.
I cant locate my old stats but i dont think they have changed that much if at all mate.

Its weird that it stays below 14.3 ?
cheers for the help
Any ideas ?

How are you measuring the throughput?  IE site and router connection . Any idea of the profile from BTw speed tester

Looks like my ip profile is 14.72 Mbps ?
would i need to contact idnet or bt to take a look at this ?

been testing various sites , using wired connection on ie and firefox the btw is as follows mate

1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

Download  Speed
14.65 Mbps

0 Mbps 21 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 14.65 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 14.72 Mbps

2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.

Upload Speed
0.86 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.83 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.86Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

It would be IDNet support that would take a look first.

I think that profile is correct , it should be 88.2% of sync speed for adsl2+ according to http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm#IPprofile_v_sync.

As I said earlier if you've had a higher sync rate something has changed as a 3db margin leaves no room for improvement. If you can find a downstream attenuation from earlier records which is lower than 15 it would fit with the higher previous sync, whether you can do anything about it is another matter as somehow you have to persuade the exchange dslam that your line is of better quality and/or nearer to the exchange.

Could be worse! You could have my parents' bit of string which seems to be suffering from the current dryness, cool nights and warm days. Everything's fine during the day and night, but when the heat of the day drives off the dew in the joints, the SNR goes down to zip, and the modem gives up completely and has to be manually reset.

what would have caused this though ? like i said i have been 19-20MB for years now?

Have you tried the test socket yet? Having had a look at Kitz speed estimates for a 15db attenuation you possibly could be doing better, using the test socket will hopefully eliminate any noise/interference your side of the master socket. You need to check the router stats on connection a higher sync or the same with a higher margin would obviously be hopeful.

yeah mate tried master socket no phone attached etc switched filter in case etc

Nick from support has put a reset on the line so hopefully over the next 3-4 days it will resolve
