Title: ADSL2+
Post by: Clive on Aug 27, 2014, 12:09:09
Following on from a previous thread, I've bitten the bullet and upgraded to ADSL2+ which will give me an estimated download speed of 18 Mp/s.  My exchange is already enabled so there will not be a charge to transfer over.  The time scale is 24 hours and my Netgear router should work without any change of settings.  I'll keep you posted.  Thanks Nick and Simon Mulliss.

When you do get your fast new connection, bear a thought for those on the end of 4 miles of knotted wet string who can barely get 3Mbps on a good day, with no hope of ADSL2 or FTTC ever.

When I was with BT I was paying £24 a month for 104 kp/s - on broadband!  That's what I call suffering!  Tomorrow is the acid test.   :-X

And a result!  No problems with the router and my speed according to Namesco is 12.7 Mp/s so that's doubled.  I'm happy enough with that.

It would be interesting to see your router stats, including SNR.  Do you know how to find them?

Rick once made me find them.  But you will have to talk me through it.

It's a while since I used a Netgear, so I can't remember off the top of my head, but this should help:

http://documentation.netgear.com/dg834g/enu/202-10155-01/DG834Gv3_RM01-06-09.html

Just don't forget to mask your IP address when you post them.

remember adsl2+ is a bit more finicky on frequency as its more susceptible to REIN, and general RFI so make sure your cabling is good, also from memory you will be in a new 10 day training period. My ADSL2+ ran fine for ages then I was hit by REIN, now I have had fibre for a year its been a godsend. In fact contract is up in a few days.

SNR is 3dB.  Is that good or bad?   :dunno:  The router says my download speed is 19.6 Mp/s but Namesco claims 13.6 Mp/s.

The SNR is very low.  That might change over the training period, assuming there is one.

I can see that anything under 6 is life threatening!   :eek4:

From memory I think the training period was 10 days for ADSL2+ so it should sort itself out by then.  ::)

The router is giving you the sync speed with the exchange ie 19 which is excellent. If you've got a quiet line it will hold at 3db on ADSL2+ sometimes. So all looks good so far, throughput is a bit down but I think that's due to other factors ie are you using WiFi to test with Namesco?

Yes, I'm using WiFi which I know is not ideal!

I think it's possibly the WiFi that's limiting the throughput then, if you try with an Ethernet cable you may find your near the router sync of 19

I'll try that Steve, but it will have to wait until tomorrow as the cable is stored in a box in a wardrobe and Mrs Clive is asleep.

When I was on ADSL2+ I had a really good line with a target noise margin of 3db so as long as it is stable I wouldn't worry about that.

Two weeks have passed so my system should be potty trained by now.   8-)  The stats are unchanged from the day it was commissioned so presumably all is well.   :D
