Title: Idnet website not accessible?
Post by: Ray on Aug 20, 2014, 12:15:10
Is anyone having problems with access to the Idnet website?
I can't seem to open it or access the mail servers either, trying to convert my Idnet email addresses to IMAP.  ???

Safari's just given me some nonsense when trying to login but FF has worked ok and webmail is accessible.

No problems here with either Safari or Firefox.  Webmail is also OK

Fine here, Ray.

I think it could have had something to do with MBAM Pro that I use on this PC, as soon as I shut that down I could get the IDnet website Ok and my Idnet mail again, very strange!  :-\

It also seems to have stuffed up my MS Outlook installation as well, I've had to do a repair reinstall on it.

The new version of MBAM Premium is a little rocky.  Sometimes it works fine, but can sometimes appear to throttle a connection for no reason.

Yes it does seem a bit flaky at the moment, Simon, it looks like it corrupted my Outlook profile, I've had to go back to a restore point from 3 days ago to get it working again.  :( Which means all the time I spent yesterday afternoon converting all my mail account to Imap was wasted, in the process of doing them all again now!  :shake: Bl**dy computers!

I can't get in either.  Just wanted to check my usage as we are using a lot of iPlayer at the moment.  I don't use the e-mail as it seems a bit unreliable for some reason.   :dunno:

It's up and running for me. It might have something to do with the 512K capacity problem. Cisco seems to think it might take a week or two before everyone rolls out the fix.

Ah right!  That might explain it.

It's down again for me, I've changed from the Idnet DNS servers to OpenDNS to see if that's the problem - made no difference, whatever the cause is it also seems to take out the mail servers as well. >:( :(

Strange thing is I can access the site via 3G on my mobile.  ???

No issues for me Ray both account and email log in working.

I can get in this morning too.  I've used 80% of my peak allowance so I may tip over to paying extra if the iPlayer continues to be utilised.  I've tried looking to see what the charges are but they are nowhere obvious.  Is it £5 a Gb?

It's just started working again for me.  :)

£1 per Gb over and above,

That's not bad is it?  A TV programme seems to use up 1Gb so that's quite affordable.   8-)

... If you can find anything worth watching.

The forum was unavailable again for me just now, for about 2-3 minutes.  ::)

I'm confused!     The package I have is ADSL lite which gives me 10 Gb peak plus 30 Gb off peak.  Is that the same as the Enterprise Lite which gives 25Gb peak for the same price?
Title: Re: Idnet website not accessible?
Post by: Simon on Aug 21, 2014, 22:10:11
You're still on one of the old packages, Clive.  The difference is that the 25Gb on Enterprise Lite is not split peak / off peak, so, whereas you currently have 40Gb split, but can only use 30Gb of it off peak, with the new package, you'd get 25Gb to use whenever you like.  :)

That's a much better deal as I rarely use any off peak.  It's disappointing that they didn't inform me of the new package but I'll phone them up to change to 25Gb.   :thumb:  Thanks Simon!

The 'new' packages have been in place for at least a year, since the new website appeared.  I think there is an announcement somewhere, but you may have been on holiday and missed it.  ;D

You don't actually need to phone them to upgrade.  You can do this via your customer portal by clicking 'Upgrade Package' under the Broadband heading.  There will be a Comments box where you can put 'Package upgrade only', just for clarity.

They are planning to refresh the packages again this Autumn.  :)

OK, I'll take a look at that first but no doubt I'll end up phoning someone.   ;D  Gosh, I've already taxed the car online today and switched energy packages.  Changing my internet package may be too much for one day!

Changing energy suppliers is something I should be looking at too.

I've got to change my car insurance next week. I dread to think how much of a hassle that's going to be :'(

I stayed with LV for both cars this year as they came out cheapest on the comparison sites.  It's the first time I've rolled over insurance in decades!

Depending on you usage some of the smaller ones are really good like Ecotricty and Good Energy. I stayed with Southern Electricity as the saving was only £25 over a year and I get the warm home discount with SSE whereas some smaller companies don't do that. Also I had smart meters fitted which make life a lot easier and I can see in real time my usage (sent every 30 mins) and help keep it as low as possible. (Also I cant get to gas meter as its to low to bend down to so this saves on estimates)

Perhaps I'm being naive, but I find myself hesitant to look at the smaller companies.  Would support be as good in the event of a power failure (ie, would a fix be as quick), and what would happen if the company suddenly went bust?  How easy would it then be to transfer to another supplier?

Sorry guys, but I've logged in to upgrade to Enterprise Lite but it says something about having to pay a charge to upgrade from ADSL to ADSL2.  I haven't a clue what ADSL2 is or if I will need new equipment.  It's telling me I'll get 18Mp/s download speed but I know I'm only getting 6.5 Mp/s at present.  Can anyone enlighten me?   :D

I think you will automatically get upgraded to ADSL2+, hence the increase in line speed, but you shouldn't get charged as it's still only a package upgrade.

Give them a quick call to put your mind at rest, Clive.  :)

I remember paying a one off £11 to go from adsl to ADSL2+ as its a different product not sure of they still charge that. Depends on your router Clive most routers can do ADSL2+ but worth checking.

As Gary said, I thought there was a nominal charge?  ( but may be no longer applicable) However the adsl2+ estimate looks a worthwhile upgrade in terms of speed, you may however use more bandwidth with a faster connection.

I'm fairly certain that I wasn't charged for my upgrade.  It will be interesting to see what they tell Clive.

I was adsl and adsl2+ are two different products its not a package change and im sure involves BTW/BTOR doing some magic with some buttons. It may have changed by now though.

I haven't read all through this, but it might throw some light on the upgrade charge:

I think perhaps the reason I wasn't charged, is that I pay annually.

They want me to e-mail them.

  Nick mailed me back to say it's an upgrade to adsl2 for which there is a charge of £11 + vat.  It will take one working day and my Netgear will probably still work if a setting is changed.  Obviously I'll wait until after the bank holiday now.

Well, you could do it through the portal and presumably it won't happen until Tuesday anyway - but perhaps best to wait until someone is there, just in case.

I just wonder if an email request is just to provide proof in case of misunderstanding.

Good point, but I'd pressed 1 for sales and got through to support instead.  Support said they would get sales to phone me back but they were too busy so support asked me to send an e-mail.  I'm just happy they are so easy to contact.   8-)
