Or only consistently works in speaker mode. I'm reasonably sure it is just a problem with the phone (I can make and receive calls after all) but what can I do about it? Googling brings up suggestions relating to mobiles which doesn't help. I would rather not buy another one, by the way.

Get another phone, its broken... if it was your landline you would soon know about it.
You can pick up a cheap landline phone for less than a tenner on Amazon or in larger supermarkets. It certainly sounds as though that would be the solution. :)
