However, out of the mouths of babies, and madmen . . .  a lot of the tech used in th'internet does have its origins in the defence industries (as with medicine, materials science, transport and engineering, so everything really).

Yep. There is sometimes though, just the convenience of a tool, without even the need to push it in certain directions. Like Virus scanner companies not needing to poke holes in Windows, though it being to their benefit. :D
