Title: Apology to my router..and 'WTF?' to IDNet
Post by: andrue on Jan 12, 2014, 11:43:13
I was browsing the web this morning and suddenly lost all connectivity. When I checked my new (Billion) router its log only had one entry. I swore at it (yet another damn router can't keep going 24/7 I thought) and powercycled it. I've just got around to checking the Craginswebsite list of TBBQMs and it turns out it was IDNet that glitched just before 9am since all their IDNet monitors have the same break.

So:Dear Router - I'm sorry for doubting you. Dear IDNet - what happened?

:eyebrow:

Mine dropped, but I was expecting it after the notification from IDNet (a day or two ago) about maintenance being planned for this morning.

Ah, yes! That explains it.

Mine had three drop-outs this morning as the maintenance happened, one very quick one at 8:46 then, then another at 9:02  then another at 9:08 which gave me the BT wholesale page till 9:12. Then all was well. Hopefully with the extra bandwidth now planned for the 14th  things should be back to normal.  :fingers:

Ah yes. Extra bandwidth. Since I sorted out my mail server and junked the Whitebox I'm averaging less than 100MB a day anyway. Originally I intended being careful since I only had 20GB for the rest of the month but now it seems that as a user my typical usage rarely breaks 100MB a day. I guess having FTTC and 100GB allowance might be a bit excessive :)

I think I'm racing you downhill. So far this month it's often under 50MB a day; savaged only by my ineptitude at flashing roms on the phone, which needed five attempts.

Im at 48Gb this month all ready out of my 100Gb, then again as I'm disabled and at home the internet gets used a lot for gaming and film downloads. This month is a bit excessive but we normally use 2GB a day quite easily with the clutter of devises we have.

We signed up to NetFlix at the start of the month and it's consuming between 2.5GB and 7.5GB a day with careful use. I'm on the old 30/90GB split service so I'm afraid I'm looking around for an unlimited FTTC package.

I may need to do this in September when our contract is up, 100GB I can get buy with but I would like to not have to worry about hitting that limit, and I can't afford £45 for 200GB when I could get unlimited from Zen. I wont personally go to BT or Plusnet, and I definitely wont take up sky. BT is great value for sports fans but I have gone mad waiting for calls to be answered already and its not even my ISP also I'm not any kind of sports fans so no gain there really for myself but its worth it if you are. Plusnets cs seem slow and clunky from what I can make out, and I have seen more complaints in TBB recently which puts me off. Sky wont help you unless you use their gear and their current FTTC sky router is not something I would use its a major step down from what I have now.

If there is a favourable change in IDNets packages I might stay but I do think as a consumer my needs have changed to much. My fear with unlimited packages though is it attracts massive downloaders, and no matter how big the company is, you can't keep that up forever on FTTC, not even BT. Sky oversubscribed in the Bognor area last year and speeds were awful for a while. Even BT is noticeably slow to when I use my mothers line, compared with iDNet operating at is normally good speeds, before the recent troubles that is.

I do however realise my needs and IDNets business orientated tariffs are no longer as compatible, as they were, IDNet are not geared up for heavy home users at a price point I can afford, and that's fair enough its not that kind of ISP. So I will see what's around when my contract comes to an end this year. Although my phone line will stay with them if at all possible.
