When I go to their site I can only see USA downloads, is that what I should use?

NO, you can search for 'other' where it says United states, use that. Also make sure its the right version DGN1000 as there is a DGN1000 and DGN1000v3
Have you got a good reason to upgrade?
The last time I tried upgrading a Netgear Router, it "bricked" it!
Seems like Netgear upgrades sometimes go that way :-\
Unless you've information regarding a router/UPNP exploit I'd leave it alone,

If you hard reset before hand and hard reset after and don't use a backup it should work fine. THre has been a spate of routers with backdoor issues and some with Windows 8 problems, Most updates on higher end routers stabilise in theory, if you are on the initial firmware an upgrade is not a bad idea, it depends what if anything it brings in stability an features/fixes. I think in general wait to see if there are issues if not stay up to date. My last update on my old D6300 brought beamforming+ a well worth update. my R6300v2 is still on the initial version as no new updates have come out yet.
