Reminds me it's time to back up my files again! Thanks Glenn.
Scary stuff!
Yes, certainly is
That's really nasty. I've not heard of anyone being caught by it yet though :fingers: It probably makes cloud based storage the best place to store your data.
I've always thought cloud based solutions made some sense, after all I use a bank to look after my money I don't hide it under the mattress.
But is there anything stopping cloud based solutions from being attacked by this, or other types of malware?
I think it's a balance of risks, with the above to rely on a connected NAS or USB disk as a backup is not truly safe, therefore you would need a separate store of valuble data somewhere. Whether that's an unconnected disk only used when your sure it's safe to attach or cloud storage, that's your choice.
is that just an advert for malwarebytes pro :dunno:

I think it's a bit of that plus an indication how serious this potentially is. Every AV vendor seems to be using it to promote their products e.g. scroll down for the video here (and this should be compulsory watching for everyone) : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/10/18/cryptolocker_ransmware/?page=2
Very scary stuff! >:(
Just thought it might be worth reminding people of this as there is a BBC News atricle about it (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24964426).
