As I intend applying to join IDNet next week I wondered how the process of migration actually works. At the moment I'm on a LLU connection with f2s and I understand that it takes about six days for an LLU migration to a non-LLU ISP with a possible four hours downtime. Do I get prior notice of the planned downtime for the actual transfer?
Previous to my joining f2s where I have always been on LLU I was on PAYG dial-up so I've had no experience of broadband migration.
I would assume that you don't get prior notice, as it's just as and when BT decide to get round to doing it. The only notice you get is the day it is going to happen.
I agree with Lance, encee, you are likely to be told the date on which your migration will occur and, possibly, a time for its completion. After that, I'm afraid, you will just have to wait for the light to go out, then return... :(
Not sure about LLU conversion, but my standard, like for like move went without any loss of use at all, it happened around 0400 hours.

Because it is a LLU migration, there has to be some downtime. I'm pretty sure you will be told the day.
Once you have signed up for IDNet, you can start using your IDNet email address(es) straight away, for receiving emails at least.
Really? How is that possible if I wouldn't yet be connected to IDNet?
Once your account has been set up, which precedes the phsyical migration, you will have access to your account page. From there, you can create as many email addresses as you want, in the form user@idnet.com. Mailboxes have a 100MB capacity, with a 10MB limit on attachments.
When you have created the new mail addresses, you can start using them immediately, using the IDNet POP server (IMAP is also available) to collect the mail from but your current ISP's SMTP server to send through. Then, when you migrate, just change to the IDNet SMTP server. Anyone responding to your email in the interim will be unaware of the switch.

Forgive my ignorance but what if any changes will I have to make to OE to be able to do that?
You'll need to create a new account for each email address you add, Noreen.
In OE, click on Tools > Accounts then select the Mail tab.
Click the Add button and select Mail.
In the following screens:
1) Choose a display name which will identify the account to you
2) Enter the email address you have created, eg user@idnet.com
3) Enter the incoming (pop3.idnet.com) and outgoing (smtp.idnet.com) servers
4) Enter the account name, eg user@idnet.com, and password
5) Click on Finish.
Note that, if you want to start sending mail from the account before you migrate, you should substitute your current ISP's smtp server in step 3.
Well, I've just completed the application for IDNet and had an email saying that it's being processed. I've also mentioned IDNet on the freedom2support forum for the benefit of others. :)

I've followed the instructions for setting up OE to receive email but when I check for mail (I sent a test email from yahoo) I keep getting the Login box asking me to enter my password for IDNet, when I do that it just keeps coming back. I've obviously got something wrong with this.

Try going to the webmail interface:
http://webmail.idnet.com/
If you can login there, the email account is up and running, so the issue lays with OE. If you can't login there, have a word with support and they can kick the server for you. One thing does occur to me, your email password will be the one you set when creating the mail account, not the one which will be used for your IDNet login (though they could be the same, of course).

The email advice is very useful but one question, just how many free email addresses can I have? Just got the one at the moment and about to try and add it to my Thunderbird set-up.
