Hi guys,
I need a new router, my current one is causing a lot of noise over the phone.
Basically, I'm thinking about either the 2wire/BT 2700HGV or a speedtouch one. I have a couple of questions about the 2700HGV:
1) Physically, is it much bigger than usual routers? I've seen a few reports saying it's quite a beast!
2) Obviously, people have brought them from ebay - how much for (inc del)?
If I was to get a speedtouch modem, on features and stability, what one would be recommended? In addition, I am right that speedtouch routers are generally good at holding sync aren't I?
Thanks
Quote from: Lance........ I am right that speedtouch routers are generally good at holding sync aren't I?
I sync' so!!
Sorry Lance ... :out: :timeout:
;D
oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!
I have used Thompson Speedtouch for the last 4 years, first the 510 which is now a spare and now run the 546 v6 and they are very good. The Speedtouch 585 is said to be good also.
The Zyxel P-660H is another good router and said to be excellent on long lines.
Never seen the BT beastie so can't comment.
Thanks Dorsetboy. What is the logging like on the Speedtouch's? Does it record loss of sync etc?
Hi,
I recently brought the BT 2700 of Ebay. Paid about £40.00 for it. I must admit its the best router I have ever used (and I have tried a lot of routers ;D). In fact its so stable plus a new filtered face plate I am thinking of losing the interleaving. To give you some idea of what the stats are like I have copied some of mine. Now a lot of you round here know how bad my line used to be and now the stats make my line look quite good.

The logging is not brilliant on Speedtouch routers, there is an event log but it is not detailed.
The Zyxel on the other hand is positively verbose!
Hi, As you know from my posting on speed checks, I was having all sort of problems with loss of sync and slow/erratic speeds. I purchased the BT 2700hgv hub and each day I do a number of speed checks because I still can not believe what I am seeing. No loss of sync since I installed last Tuesday evening. My profile has gone back up to 6000k and hopefully will go up to 6500 shortly, every test shows above 5700kbps best so far 5875kbps. I am probably going to purchase another as a spare as I can not bare the thought of going back to Belkin or any other after this. As for the size, 9inches across, 7inches deep and 1 1/2 high when used without the stand (small price to pay). I bought it on ebay from a guy who seems to have a good stock and 100% feedback. When asked a question after the purchase he replied with advice straight away. Hope this helps as much as you all helped me. ;D
Thanks for the replies, I'll let you know which router I purchase!
I am using the Zyxel 660 at the moment, I got it from Amazon a while back for £29.99, including a USB Dongle and delivery.
An absolute doddle to set up, it needs to be.. ;D
It is totally stable and the wireless section works very well, far better than my old BT Voyager 2100.
Well, I've purchased a 2700HGV for £33+ £6 delivery. Once it arrives I'll give you all my opinion of it!
Good luck with it Lance, hope it performs as well as others have found. ;D
So do I dorset! Thanks!
Hi,
I have the 2700HGV and I have tried LOADS of routers too inc the Speedtouch 585 and 546 and the Belkin 7633 all of course tweaked to death by the very handy DMT tool.
Nothing gets close to the 2700 on holding a line or on speed. Although the 2700 is out of the box and not tweakable by the DMT tool, it is a clear winner for me and I have a line a lot worse than most of you with an Attn of just under 60 but I can still get 2 meg from the line wheras previous routers would at best be 1.5meg and normally 1meg and many many noise margin drops leading to disconnections.
I got mine of fleabay and paid £30 for an unlocked one with the SBC software on it. (Ydrol)
I am not bothering looking for any other type of router this is the best by far for me.

Thanks for the reassurance, ReD!
I don't know if mine is unlocked or not, but if it isn't I'll just use the simple DNS poisoning trick!
Does anyone know what the latest firmware version is?

Fortunately for me, I have a good line, so no benefit in getting one.
Hi Lance, My router is supposed to be the latest BT 2700HGV Hardware Version: 2701-100589-005 Software Version: 5.29.107.19 Still holding sync after a week, Up 448 down 7458 all speed test in the region of 5840kbps on a profile of 6000k. Hopefully profile will raise to 6500k soon. Still well happy >:D
Thanks Den :)

Any luck with the new router ?
Only just this second got it plugged in! First impressions good though!
You will be very glad you did not go for the Zyxel >:( ::) ::)
My neighbour came in 2 nights back ,his router had packed up and he can't send in his days figures etc.
Get the nice new Zyxel out of box .......plug it in and.....terrible smell and flashing of lights, end of story.
Getting Zyxel to respond for an RMA is like getting a tax refund.
If this is what they call service I won't be keeping any replacement,it will be in the freeads and gone.
Well, first impressions are very good. It has synced around 200-300kbps higher than my previous linksys, but more importantly the noise margin is appearing to stay nice and smooth and so far hasn't dropped below 6! Consequently, I've not yet had a resync.
I'll give another report later!

Excuse me, I have a Zyxel 660 ;D ;D
Mine is brilliant, never lost connection, faster speed than my BT Voyager 2100, kids stuff to set up.
Surely your friend didn't buy it directly from Zyxel, so any RMA is down to the Retailer. I emailed Zyxel with a query and they responded within minutes, with an answer.
It has a 92 positive 5* reviews on ebuyer, so your friend must have
been unlucky.
Mine only cost £29.99 including a USB Dongle and delivery from Amazon, I am well pleased with mine.
Lance, good news so far, keep us updated.

No it is my router, bought in April but not used as my Speedtouch was replaced and came back on the day the Zyxel arrived, so I kept the Zyxel as back up/spare.
Came from Broadband Buyer but as it is over 30 days they just send you to Zyxel for any query/support/repair etc.
Zyxel have been emailed several times, their response is ............sadly lacking.
2 more companies on my "don't bother with them again list".
Yes they have good reviews from those that have routers that are working, but the service when a problem arises is something else.Impressions so far??...............NOT GOOD> >:(
I've just had the most stable night ever for my line. It re-synced once at 12:30am this morning, as opposed to maybe 3-4 times with my old router. I'm hopeful now that it will be on what I call the 'worst case' sync which it will hopefully keep on to now.
When I say worst case sync, what I mean is the sync required to have enough noise margin for it not to not drop below 0 and require another resync. Typically, with my old linksys, this would be around 46xxkpbs. With my new router, it would appear to be around 48xx.
My router when I received it wasn't unlocked, but using the DNS poisoning method, it was easy as pie!
It's still early days, but it looks like the 2700HGV is going to get a recommendation from me!
If you want to have more detailed stats/change config ect go to

Came from Broadband Buyer but as it is over 30 days they just send you to Zyxel for any query/support/repair etc.
Then it is Broadband Buyer at fault, they are responsible for any warranty/support work in the first year, not Zyxel.
I will avoid Broadband Buyer, I almost made a purchase from them last week.
I got mine from Amazon and I know for certain if it has a fault Amazon will replace/refund without question.
It's perhaps worth making the point that a contract is always with the retailer, not the manufacturer, and that the company should honour its responsibility under the Sale and Supply of Goods Act. If an item develops a fault in the first six months, it is now down to the seller to prove it isn't faulty, rather than the purchaser having to prove it is. Liability extends beyond the first year, courts have indicated that electrical appliances can be expected to have a working life of up to six years. Obviously, each case is decided individually, but it helps to know the precedent. Finally, if the purchase was made with a credit card and the transaction was for £100+, then the card company is jointly liable with the retailer under the Consumer Credit Act, Section 75.
Lance, it's looking good, keep us updated.

Agreed Rik, are you not going to invest in a 2700 for your carpy line??
I'm waiting for a larger body of evidence. :) TBH, I don't have an instability problem, like Lance, I normally only see one drop every couple of weeks or so (unless there's thunder around!), and I don't get a high error count, so I'm not sure how much I would gain with a router change.
Fair comment, I always think that there is an element of jumping on the bandwagon when these things are going the rounds on the net.
The eBayer's are making a killing, as these were selling for £8.50 each not so long ago.
It's called supply and demand! :)
;D ;D ;D
Actually Rik, there appears to be an endless supply of these 2700's.
Any idea how they are reaching the market? Perhaps we could cut out the middleman...
It seems to be the BT business customers who have received one, but are happy using the one they already have.
I wouldn't have changed had my old router not gone up the spout!
Hi Lance, Just checking to see how you are getting on with the BT 2700HGV hub? :)
Thanks for asking, Den! :)
Well, after leaving Routerstats running for an extended period yesterday, it seems that the router is far more stable than my previous router. The noise margin was staying constant, rather than jumping up and down all the time. It also appears to consistently sync higher than my previous router, by between 200-300kpbs.
On the whole, if you are looking for a replacement router, and struggle a little with stability on the line, I would recommend giving this router a go!
Lance,
Great to hear another 2700 success, mine is just superb esp for a long line.
Can you help me with the settings for router stats for this router, I cant seem to get it to work.

No problem - I'll do it when I'm at home later. Although all I did was navigate to the page displaying the stats, copied the url into routerstats, told it not to log on using a name/password, hit the get page button (on the third tab along the top I think), highlighted the figure and hit the relevant button (ie highlighted the downstream sync and clicked the Rx Sync button). Once I'd done this, it was able to connect and grab the figures no problem.
Lance,
Its the stats page I am struggling with, tried a few that have them on it but no good, so if you could tell me which one it is that would be great

Depending on your software the following link will change your wireless power. This link is 1 quarter wireless power it takes your your router up to level 4 (100mw) UK legal limit.

To verify the changes go to system log

You can change the wireless power by changing the final figure.
VALUE 1 (25MW) VALUE 2 (50mw) VALUE 3 (75MW) VALUE 4(100MW).
THERE ARE FURTHER SETTINGS BUT THESE ARE ILLEGAL IN THE UK AND SUBJECT TO HEFTY FINES.
You may need to cut and paste the top link.
This is what you should see on the system log.

Hi Lance, Just to let you know >:D I purchased a 2wire card for my laptop from a guy on ebay, just set it up and it has blown away the Belkin one I was using. Have you tried the link to increase range on the 2700HGV yet and if so which version of firmware does it work on?
I don`t know which I like the best the new router or IDNET (suspect that it`s IDNET first and then the router but its aclose thing) :evilb: :evilb:
For your info my software and hardware versions.
Hardware Version: 2701-100589-005
Software Version: 5.29.107.19
.
Thanks for that old Bill. Checked my log and it shows Wireless power set to 50. This has not changed since I first set up the router. Shall I try a higher number or leave well alone. I could do with some extra range as the lounge is quite a way from my study. ;D
Well if thats correct your on very risky ground. Setting 25 is the UK legal limit.
I have not alltered any settings I just checked the log using the link you posted. When I checked back to when it was first powered up that was the setting on there. In the manual it shows how to change settings but the part to change the settings does not display. I have just tried the link that you posted and the power setting is still on 50. :-[
When I brought mine this is the info I was sent.
The power settings
VALUE=1 25MW VALUE=2 50MW VALUE=3 75MW VALUE=4 100MW NOT LEGAL AMOUNTS VALUE=5 150MW VALUE=6200MW VALUE=7 250MW VALUE=8 300MW VALUE=9350MW VALUE=10 400MW (SURPLY THE WHOLE NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH YOUR WIRELESS SIGNAL)
Thinking about it the 50 could mean 50% power which would be 150MW or it could mean value=2 which is 50mw.
I emailed the person I brought the router from about changing the wireless settings. This is the reply I recieved.
I've recently confirmed that the wireless power with the new BT firmware cannot be changed. It appears to change, but when I monitor it from a different device, it is the same. So it's not really worth trying to change
No chance of me piggybacking Lance's connection then... ;)

Thanks for the update DB, I am well impressed with my Zyxel, not sure if it is a coincidence but my speeds have increased since using it, over my older BT Voyager 2100.
Could well be an increase in speed they are known to be good on very long lines, though you are so close to the exchange any router "should " be able to deliver the maximum performance.
The logging is very good in the Zyxel, lots of configuration available too, excellent firewall control and a content filter which is great for family use.
All I can say is now that BT has finished doing work to my line this BT 2700 is amazing. I have seen a 1 meg increase in download speed. ;D
On the same lines: My speed is always about 6300kbps now and very stable. As you know I was lucky to get 3500 and some times as low as 100. After joining idnet the next best thing I have done was buy the BT 2700HGV. Thanks to everybody. ;D ;D ;D
Thank you

Got my highest speed ever recorded at DSLZone last night, 6999, which equates to 95% throughput, which was a better speed than some on BE so called 24 Mps,and Sky 16Mps. I will break that 7000 mark yet. ;)
I am sure there is room for improvement, I havn't done a thing, just plugged it in, and go.
Still I aint obsessed with speed, like some peeps. ;D ;D
Lol,
You gotta love these 2700's, I have not looked back since getting one and have had the confidence to sell all my other 3 routers for good money.
I know this router is not THE BEST for ALL lines but for long lines it seems top notch.
As previously said, IDNET + 2700HGV = HEAVEN ON EARTH..........................(well almost !!)
If you get a chance to try one go for it, you may never look back.................
Oh and tomorrow I can add more speed cos the new QOS banding gives me 250Kbs more, which I would not have with any of the other 3 routers.
BUT best of all.........................................
Loss of signals since = 1 (SWEB Power outage), none for any other reason (not bad for over 2 months) , rock solid noise margin and no degradation of service.
and it cost less than £30 !!!

I wonder if IDNet are aware of these wonderful routers? It may be worth them doing a little investigation to see whether they would be able to offer them for their packages?
Oddly enough, Lance, I had been thinking that... :)
I sense an email to Simon coming on!
You or me?
I've been reading about these, they seem rather good.
I found this site www.digidave.co.uk they sell the 2700HG (no VOIP) for 29.99 - seems quite good to me :) - I'm tempted.
Dave
You can't really go wrong, based on the experience of those who have tried the router, Dave. Though, on your line, it's not going to have to work hard. :)
I think these routers are only of any benefit to people on long lines.
BTW, does the £29.99 price include delivery from Jersey? I cannot find any reference to Delivery Charges.
( Probably staring me in the face . ;D ).
Wow interesting read.
I've been having problems with my line at the moment, and I don't think the Billion Router was helping things. At the moment I am trying out a cheap-o £20 Netgear Router and it seems to be doing a bit better.
After reading this topic though it would appear that like for Lance, this BT 2700HGV is the Router for me! ;)
A few questiosn though, what's all this talk of locked and unlocked models?!
What should I try and get?
Also, where do I get one from? Lance do you perhaps a link to where you purchased yours through?
Thanks for any help! :)
Hi Jimbo
These routers were supplied by BT for their customers and are locked to the BT service. You can purchase an unlocked one, or unlock it yourself, sources include eBay and the Jersey-based supplier in Dave's link.
Given your line, and the experience of others so far, I'd say it was worth trying one - if it solves your problems, you can sell the Billion and the Netgear.
Lance will be along later with his source - the router is also being talked about over on ThinkBroadband with the eBay seller, ydrol, getting praise.

Cheers Rik, yeah it's worth a shot like you say. So far the Netgear is going well. A few re-sync's though, however, always around the 2Mb mark. I've just fitted a new shielded Belkin RJ-11 cable so hopefully that will help as well. :)
I'm off to search eBay now for that fella and the Router, but when you say locked to BT... does this mean it would not work with IDNet? No.... am I being daft? Lol.

Hi all, I bought my BT 2700HGV off YDROL and the card for my laptop off digidave both on ebay and both great to buy off. Carefull if buying the BT 2700HGV that you buy the latest model and also if you would like to add voip it needs to be the HGV not the HG model. The one I bought off YDROL was the latest model, unlocked and with two voip lines ready to be activated. The card for my laptop was a 2wire and far better than my Belkin. 8)
Following recommendations here and in other forums I have also bought a 2700 HGV from ydrol on ebay and can recommend both the router and the seller.
Although my line still gives problems, the router hangs on to the connection during noise spikes better than my Speedtouch 585 did, it doesn't require frequent reboots as the Speedtouch did and also gives a slightly faster connection speed enabling me to sometimes get onto the 1024kbps profile.
I have also found that my noise spikes are caused by trains passing just under a quarter of a mile away but I don't know how to go about doing anything about this. Anyone any experience of this ?
Just to confirm these things are great on long lines. They normally give about half a meg higher then any other router. As a result i am syncing at 5184. If I try my Speedtouch its around 4633. I brought mine from a person called Ydrol on Ebay. He tends to post quite a bit on http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ .Once again I just cannot fault the router its top notch.
I also brought mine from ebay, although from a different seller to everyone else! They are really easy to unlock if it doesn't come unlocked anyway, so thats nothing to worry about.
In answer to your question, Rik, i'll email in the morning!

There was a long discussion of this sort of problem, involving Virgin trains, over on TB, Phil. The approach was to get the SFI team involved, so you will have to talk to support.
is there any BT BUSINESS HUB - BT 2700HGV that cant be unlocked.
i have no idea what the firmware on it is.
thanks
As far as I know there is none which can't be unlocked. However, with the latest version of the hardware, it is not possible to unlock by flashing the firmware, and you have to use the DNS method instead.
I have a older version of the hardware, with v4 firmare, so although I could unlock by flashing the firmware, I chose the DNS route and it works a treat!

>:D >:D >:D
Well having had the replacement Zyxel router for 7 days it is now back in the box, started getting issues 2 days ago with poor connection/erratic behaviour and now cannot connect at all.
Tried re-configuration and resets several times and nothing will make a difference, plain fact these routers are rubbish, the engineer at the hosting company I use said"The only use that router has is as an ornament, they have a dreadful reputation here I had 4 replacements before I gave up and found something else."
So 1 x Zyxel P=660H about to hit the dustbin, the product is a disaster as is the companies support system.Broadbandbuyer promised a full refund of carriage but that has failed to materialise.
Pursuing this any further will cost more than the product did in the first place(I have already sent a dozen emails and been held on the phone for lengthy periods, and for what) ,so lesson learned, never buy anything from Broadbandbuyer and avoid Zyxel products at all costs.
Mine is perfect DB... ;D ;D
Best router that I have used so far. ;)
You were just born unlucky. ;)

95... five star reviews on ebuyer, they can't all be telling porkies. ;D ;D
Hi,
I am 2.33 kilometres away from my exchange.
Would I benefit from having a BT 2700HGV???
Thanks...

Err no,that is not the case, the model P-660H has no reviews whatever. The model you have shows 95 reviews but only 39 of those are rated @5 star........read through ,there are plenty of not so happy experiences there.
Ebuyer should not be allowed to show the "awards" like that it is clearly designed to mislead.
Hi Scorpio,
At that distance I would say the 2700HGV would help. It seems to come into a class of its own on long unstable lines. So if that is the case I would try, worked for me :D
I think, for the 2700HGV, it's a case of the longer the line, the more likely the benefit.

I used the term P-660 H for speed, mine is actually the P - 660 HW, which shows 95 reviews on eBuyer, I didn't actually read them because I got mine from Amazon, however I have just read through them and the overwhelming majority are 5* positive reviews.
Anyway, to be honest, I aint really bothered about the ratings, mine works 100%, I paid £29.99 delivered with a USB WiFi Dongle from Amazon, if it goes wrong in the first year, I know I will get a full refund from Amazon, if it dies after a year, well I shan't lay awake worrying about it.
I am over the moon with mine, rock solid and fast connection.
Just to add to the above, I did a " test run " email to Zyxel, just a silly question, got a reply in 35 minutes, you can't knock that. ;)

Hi guys,
Just a quick update on the 2700HGV - It's still great! It's now been over 9 and a half days without even a resync. Previously, my best sustained period of sync was only around 2 days, but would usually resync once or twice a night, so a great improvement!
Thanks, Lance, and when can we expect a report on the new lappy??? :)
It's looking like early next week. Tomorrow is the 10th working day, and it has a build time of 11 working days, so hopefully it'll come Tuesday!
Are you going to hold a party to launch it? ;)
Hi again.
Just finished setting up this router and so far... fantastic. Connected at 3mb!
One question which I would love some help with... well two.
1. How do you set Manual IP addresses?
It's so confusing! At the moment I have it on the standard settings (so basically DHCP) but I really just want to add the 3 computers on so that they are static.
2. No MAC security?
I can't seem to find anywhere to say if using this IP it must have this MAC address???
So I'm a little worried about security at the moment.
3. Ok I lied.... three questions. Lol.
What does the big button on the front of the router do. Hehe. :D
Thanks for any help!
Hi Jimbo, Glad you like the 2700HGV and have a much success as I have with it (now 18days with out dropping sync). Manual IP address are found via advanced settings on broadband page, Mac security I think can be set if you click on network then advanced and then on MAC settings. The big button on the front I was told was for allowing visiters access without giving them your security settings.
Hope this helps and if I am wrong on any of these allong will come one of the many people who know much more than I

Hi Den
Thanks for the help. But I was hoping that some kind fellow ;) would perhaps be able to give me a bit of a "step by step" on how to do it. Very cheaky of me to ask, but I can't seem to figure it out. :-[
Thanks again! ;)

Hi mate
Hmm didn't really help. I've got a guide with the router, but it doesn't go into much detail and just does not help.
On old routers I've used basically I can just tick a box to disable DHCP and then further down the screen there'll be a space to enter a specific IP + MAC code for that IP. I can't seem to figure it out on this router, sorry. :(
Thanks for the reply and the links though, appreciate the effort.
EDIT: Started a new thread regarding my questions.
