Title: System Tray Icons
Post by: Simon on Apr 08, 2013, 17:54:18
Does anyone know if Windows XP has a separate cache for the icons that sit in the system tray, by the clock?  Long story, but I changed one via it's image file in Program Files, which is named 'systray.ico', so I believe it's the right one, but the old one is still showing.  I've deleted the icon cache file in Windows, which refreshes all the desktop icons, but not the icons by the clock.  :dunno:

This gives me an idea.... install MSE on everyone's computer, replace with the "Norton" logo... Win!

I've realised why it didn't work.  The program I replaced the icon for has repaired itself!

Gone are the good old days where I can replace the entire OS with a skin that makes it look like the bridge of the Enterprise narrated by Captain Sulo...  did I say I? I meant those who like Star Trek... ;)

I still have my 'Forever Metallic' theme with Windows XP, but it doesn't actually change any of the icons, just the title bars and stuff.  That's another reason why I'm sticking to XP!

No more security patches for XP in a years time though, end of support from Microsoft.

Does it feel like 14 years ago when everyone was saying how useless XP was when first released?

It shows what a good operating system it is though, to have lasted this long.

I still use it on one of my machines and it will know no other OS.   :D

Windows 7 probably the best choice now. Windows 8.1 this year I think...
