Title: Oops
Post by: Niall on Apr 04, 2013, 20:22:44
I bought an ipad with retina display bobbins. The new one basically :P

I was looking at how long it was before I could upgrade my phone (November as it happens, that went quick) and noticed that I could now get the 16gb ipad for nothing other than rental. Effectively on a 24 month contract it makes it 0% finance ;D I don't have to pay anything towards it as it's a long term customer deal. I think someone on these boards did this a while ago, but apparently the offer was delayed for me as I moved somewhere else before moving back to vodafone.

So now I can finally get Guitarist magazine and some other things on the ipad and save myself some room!

I enjoy mine use it for most things, internet browsing, reading, weather, newspapers, music, photos and editing, network diagnostics but I don't play any games on it.

Yet!

BTW I used a Kindle HD at the weekend I thought that was OK too but not as intuitive and a tad slow!

My mate was just bought the Kindle HD. It's not you in disguise is it? He's Steve too :P but I didn't really like that when I tried it and ahem, broke it in Waterstones. My mum gave me her kindle (original) which I don't like at all. I may one day get a paperwhite one, but I'm in no rush.

I like my kindle, it's the version 2 (I think), with a ridiculous amount of memory- enough for about 4,000 books!

It's fast enough for its purpose... and it's a minor price to pay for only having to recharge the batteries every six weeks or so ;D

I must learn how to turn my iPad on.   ;D

You'd better wipe the mug rings off it first. ::)

Sorry I missed out a word it was the Kindle Fire HD , I agree my Kindle Touch is an excellent device for reading books on.

I love my ipad, I have the 32GB model I use it for pretty much all my daily browsing needs, it plays games brilliantly but tbh I dont game on it after giving it a try with Need for speed most wanted. If people got their head around the fact apps are the same as programs on their laptops really and for most peoples needs like watching iPlayer, word processing reading books checking email and browsing etc the tablet no matter what make is a great device. Oddly screen size does not matter when you hold something so close to you but personally I like iPad size screen over something like a mini. The latest iPad is a real power house cpu and gpu wise with a gorgeous screen. Its odd when people don't get it with these devices.

Bet the iPad 5 comes out later this month, seems like price droping of the iPad 4 suggests a 6mth update cycle, which I wont be adhering to.

Ah, right... nice to know, I was half-thinking of getting one. I won't bother.

It is compared to an iPad 4 but for the price I thought it useful, of course you won't get 6 weeks out of the battery on that.

I'm certain that I will eventually stop using mine as a table mat even though it does a superb job.  Thanks for the very encouraging words Gary - I know I must try harder but I've only just accepted that laptops are real computers.   ;D

Gary has cajoled me into transforming my table mat into an iPad and I've got myself an ID and downloaded some astronomy apps.  I've used safari to surf the web and it's not as bad as I thought it might be to use.  Well done Gary, but now I must return to my beloved net book after making my very first post using an iPad.   ;D

Congratulations! I was up north last week and I had great trouble persuading them that they didn't need to keep turning their iPads and Kindles off when they've finished using them, that's one of the big advantages to me long battery life on 'sleep' and instant access on wake.

;D  I'm very impressed with myself!  And I shall be trying out my App as soon as it gets dark enough.  I have to say I was pleased with the battery life because it was still partly charged after being away for two weeks and goodness knows when I had last used it anyway.  It's a very old iPad, brought in from Bangkok before they were available here.

Mine arrived today at 2:25 after DPD were supposed to bring it at 1:15-2:15.

So far, I'm quite impressed with it. The only thing that's annoyed me so far is that google maps is free on the iphone but has a charge on the ipad. Pfft, that's a sale lost.

There isn't a specific Google Maps version for the iPad, just use the free phone version. There are other third party developer Apps incorporating Google Maps which are not free.

Despite having rave reviews, the night sky App didn't seem to know where it was pointing.  But perhaps my iPad (a version 1) is too long in the tooth for it to work properly.  At least I'm beginning to like it.

I don't think there's any specific GPS facility on the original iPad it uses WiFi for location,

That would explain a lot,  I'll look into that.  I'm not even sure if it has cameras but I'll ask my son as it was originally his.

No wonder he told me to buy myself an iPad 3.   :bawl:  But if I wait long enough he might give me his.

Linda bought an iPad 1 12 months ago and hardly ever turned it on, but now she has discovered eBay and Estate Agents on it and is costing me a fortune. At least she is now using a computer of one sort, I will just have to convert her to a real one  >:D

I have to say, I'm totally impressed by this ipad. It's much better than I thought it was going to be. I assumed it'd just be like a big iphone, but everything seems to run slightly differently, and faster. The screen is very impressive too.

I don't like how companies are still allowed to have apps that have in-game add ons that you purchase for in-game currency, etc. I hardly play games so hadn't realised they still do this. The list of free games and also the top grossing games is pretty much the same list!

I don't understand why some apps are free on the iphone but the same ones are paid for on the ipad. Mainly when the few I've already bought on the iphone are not visibly different to the already owned apps. Some are the same, but it seems to me that some companies are "updating for the latest IOS version" and then listing the app as a new paid for version :(
