Title: Accounts etc
Post by: Bill on Dec 15, 2012, 09:15:10
Is it just me, or is the customer login borked?

My usage RSS feed has died with a "resource unavailable" error, and the Customer login page just sits there spinning its wheels.

Webmail is OK, so it's fairly specific.

Cheers Gary, I haven't had nearly enough coffee yet to even think about tracing a problem at my end!

I agree it's very secure at the moment!  ::)

I'm seeing this:

Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I've let Tim know, while sending an update on Rik, but not sure when there will be a response.

I've heard back from Tim - he's looking into it.

Back online!

Yup :thumb:

One thing I noticed a little while ago- the pretty little bar chart on the daily usage table has disappeared.

Is that general, or maybe because I'm on a package where peak/off-peak distinctions aren't made?

I haven't had that for ages (before the new packages)

Ah, OK.

I don't often visit that page (just rely on the RSS feed) so hadn't really noticed.

Now the network status page seems to be down- "Error establishing a database connection" :dunno:

Maybe they're working on it.  :dunno:  If it's not back in half an hour or so, I'll contact Tim again.

Yeah, there's no rush.

I just happened to notice that the auto-updating tab I keep on it was taking inordinately longer than usual.

I've alerted Tim.  Obviously gremlins on the works today.

Could everyone please not click on anything to check if it's working for the rest of the day.   ;D

It's working again.

Not that I clicked on it of course

There's been gremlins on the loose today.  A server problem has caused some pages on the website to go AWOL, and it's also affected some mail services, but strangely, no one's reported any problems here.  They're working on moving stuff to another server, and I'm told things will settle down again shortly.

Seems to be off again. Can't log on to pay my annual subscription :bawl:

It went down again late last night,  in view of Simon's report that they were changing servers I didn't bother reporting it... maybe they haven't finished yet.

It seems to be working again, but I'm not convinced about the usage figures, they're quite a lot lower than I was expecting.

Maybe it didn't register properly during the down time and they'll catch up later.

That's one thing for certain.

I don't mind that- I'm comfortably within my allowance so I'm glad I switched away from the previous peak/offpeak package.

I've been surprised how much bandwidth can be eaten by streaming radio, I use it a lot as background and BBC3 will use a GByte in only about 7 hours. You might wonder why I don't just use the radio, but without an external Yagi DAB reception around here is marginal and VHF/FM isn't worth bothering with...

That has changed... this may be useful to other iTunes users:

I recently moved my iTunes library to a bigger (external) HDD. Last night I discovered that (presumably during that move) much of what I'd bought from the iTunes store hadn't been copied over and was simply noted as being available in iCloud.

I haven't "lost" it of course, but I want it on my hard drive, not on some remote server that may or may not not be available when I want to watch it

There's an option to download stuff from iCloud so I'll be doing that, but there's 150GB of it :eek4:

I found for a few items that it had copied it to the new drive and showed a separate mention of it as available in iCloud. I eventually realised that this was on items where I'd changed the genre... I suppose it thought that it was a different item that happened to have the same name. I can't be 100% certain (because some of the uncopied items also  seemed to meet that criterion) but this may be a way of preventing it happening if I ever need to move the library again.

It does have a "plus" aspect- all the HD stuff was in 720p as that was the only option available at the time. Now I've changed my default in prefs the downloaded version is 1080p (where available)  :thumb:

The iCloud option is obviously useful with devices with more limited storage ie ATV, iPhone and iPad where a one off download, watch- listen and then delete is more applicable.

Yes, I agree.

But I've now got a total of 5TB attached to this 'ere iMac (thank you, Amazon Black Friday deals ;D), so drive space isn't a problem.

It would have been nice to have been asked... OTOH, this is Apple we're talking about- they know what's best for me  ;)

I do keep my music library on HDD, which is then available via iCloud or Home share.

Yes, I use Home Share as well.

Having had a play with iTunes on the MacBook it seems that if an item is available on the local HDD it will use that (and doesn't even show the iCloud version), otherwise it will show the iCloud one. If I don't want to hit my download allowance I can attach to the iMac's shared library (assuming I'm within wireless range) and play from the copy stored on its HDD.

I'm happy with the principle of it, I'm just a bit grumpy about not having been asked when I moved the library, thus resulting in having to download a lot (150% of my monthly allowance) of files again...

edit- I can only hope that RSS usage feed doesn't go down again, I shall be paying very close attention to that for a couple of months!!!
