40 million copies in 1 month isn't to shabby, granted it's 20 million down on Win 7. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/11/windows-8-sales-are-good-if-not-great-at-40-million-copies-in-the-first-month/

As this is a forum dedicated to Apple products that's hardly relevant but since you've brought it up are you aware that WMP will not play DVDs? That makes it a pretty poor media player in my view.

Are you sure it was through Windows Media Center? It is possible but it comes at a cost via the Windows Store.

I've split this part of the thread and moved it to the Windows board.

Must be a difference to Win 8. DVD always has a royalty fee (most MP3 and digital encoders do except for the opensource ones Xvid etc). MS must add it as an extra now instead of putting it in with windows (Ahem, EU fines etc ;) ).
Where as Apple probably just include the royalty with their OS. As for downloads off of Itunes for PC, then you probably have a DVD encoder with the PC purchase, DVD rom drive or from MS already. I've not tried installing Itunes on a PC without a DVD encoder to see if it asks for you to download (read pay for ;) ), one.

It sounds silly, but I use to get that problem all the time when DVD drives first came out, and people could not play DVDs until I installed the CDs that came with their PC.

I can't find a reference off the top of my head, but Linux use to have similar problems, not being allowed to add the codecs ect for Mp3 or DVD... http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/why-linux-dont-support-mp3-and-selected-wifi-cards-out-of-the-box.html

That's probably worth grabbing but I believe you do need to have Windows 8 Pro installed.

Yes, I think it's only for Win 8. MS did cockup when first issuing the licences, instead of a code for Media Center 8, they issued full Win 8 retail codes.

http://www.videolan.org (http://www.videolan.org) is an easy fix for that.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong section but as we were talking about iTunes I was just commenting that I had downloaded Media Player free of charge and that I liked it. Playing videos is not a problem either as there are a number of ways including Media Player.  ;D

Sorry, I was talking poop. I didn't realise you were talking about Windows 8. I use Windows 7. Now where's that rock of mine to crawl back under :D

The MP product code still alters the Windows 8 Pro product code, but since you must have an activated copy of Win9Pro to download Media Player 12 there isn't a problem.
