Title: Speed Hit Again !
Post by: Seadog on Nov 14, 2012, 17:31:40
Hi Guys,

I've been on the 80/20 package for a while now since being upgraded from the 40/10 FTTC. I've had
very few issues with my throughput speed until now. Over the last month things seem to have gone
down hill. Also recently I have noticed my Gateway has changed 3 times, first I was routed through
Windsor, then through Nuneaton and now apparently now in Daventry! Is this normal and is this
something that IDNet carry out on their Network or is this wholly down to BT's Traffic Management
and trying to spread to load??

Whatever it is my speed last night was down to 3Mbits and yet my BT Profile was on 77Mbits. After
doing a BT Speedtest the download showed around 10 Mbits and the Upload failed completely to
finish the test. I then tried the new BT Beta Speedtester and that worked but showed 8 down and
16 up !! The speeds did not come back to normal till around 2am this morning so it seems like
contention is kicking in.

It's pretty annoying as I was doing over 1GB of Windows and Office Updates and wondered why it
was taking so lond. Thats when I did the test's..

Any suggestions or is everyone now experiencing this at peak times 6pm to midnight??

Thanks  8-)

See here - may be relevant but Simon_IDNet has stated in a reply to a members email that no congestion is evident on IDNet's network but they have noticed some odd behaviour on the LNS servers  :dunno:

Just to add you probably wondered how I found out about this strange routing, I use the following website
to track and trace my location/gateway, see below;

http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/

There might be better tools or websites to find this out, I can also do a manual trace route as well I guess
and put in the Gateway IP too.. interesting..

My feeling with the routing is that BT are trying to spread the load. But you shouldn't be seeing those speeds on FTTC, if you can manage a full BT Speedtest I'd send a copy to support.

Thanks Rik and Steve,

I'll keep monitoring this as I've just upgraded my package too the 100Gb which is a bit of a bummer,
something is not right that's for sure. Just stby, I'll do a quick check speedtest now,,, Ok the BT
Speedtester shows;

1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

Download  Speed
45.35 Mbps

0 Mbps 0 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 45.35 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 12 Mbps-0 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps

2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.

Upload Speed
2.95 Mbps

0 Mbps 20 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 2.95Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

We were unable to identify any performance problem with your service at this time.
It is possible that any problem you are currently, or had previously experienced may have been caused by traffic congestion on the Internet or by the server you were accessing responding slowly.

Very odd, maybe BT Speedtester is up the creek again, speedtest.net is better

Ill keep monitoring the situation and see what happens.  :o

The package upgrade shouldn't make a difference whether that be throughput or length of contract.

Also you might want to take a look at my thread here:

When it happens to me powering off the router (not the modem) for 15 minutes clears it.

I wonder if your routing changes while the router is off.

Ok I'll try that again, I tried rebooting the router last night but it made no difference, then
I tried powering off the VDSL Modem for 15 20 Minutes. I remember on ADSL sometimes it
was recommended to power off the Modem for 30 Minutes.. Will see what happens tonight,

Thanks  :)
