Is anyone else having trouble sending mail via smtp? I searched the forum and know there was a problem with this last year, but it seems to have started again. Here's the error message I get:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'c.d*****ski@r**l.ac.uk'. Subject 'test', Account: 'Chris', Server: 'smtp.idnet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 4.3.5 Server configuration problem', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
That's a test message I tried to send to my college e-mail account, but the problem isn't that end: they won't go to my partner's idnet account either.
Edited to mask email address from bots - Simon.
I'm having same problem sending with Thunderbird .
'An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 4.3.5 Server configuration problem'
Could be problem with idnet server.
I don't know if it's related but I had to disable authentication a couple of weeks ago to get it to work.
Fine for me here, are either of you using authenticated SMTP?
I've just test a test message to another address, all worked fine.
SMTP-no authentication.
My e-mail is ok again thanks.Test message sent and received.
Yes, I'm using authentication - always have done without any problem.
Try turning it off, if that works, let us know and we'll chase it up again with IDNet.
Authenticated smtp has been turned off by IDNet reportedly following spam usage. You therefore can only use this server within IDNet's network un authenticated. Whilst I can understand the reasons behind this move I find it disappointing that it's not being re instated yet or it's users informed of the change.
Me too, Steve.
That explains an issue I had a week ago via my iPhone. It would be useful if IDNet found a more practical way of dealing with this rather than turning off a feature that some people use without any message about this on the main web page.
I agree, Gary. More than a week has passed since I tried to get information on this and was promised an email back, letting me know what was happening and what was going to happen.

Maybe its my imagination but idnet seem to be more distant than usual about communication with the forum, normally information is always posted quickly, why would they advertise its existence on the main site, a bit like the forum slow downs they make no sense if people come here for help and can't post because the place locks up now and then. >:( AAISP and Zen seem manage to communicate issues quite transparently with their users :(
Yes, turning off authentication solves the problem - but mail was going out this morning via the smtp with authentication without any problem. So something changed for me this afternoon.
It may be this an intermittent issue, perhaps driven by spam probes, but we can only guess I'm afraid.

I get the feeling calling them will not help in getting information about a long term solution then. What was the initial problem?
I've just turned authentication back on both my iPhone using o2 and also the laptop via IDNet and both emails have been delivered. So things have changed again since last week.

A scam email purporting to come from IDNet, we think.

Thanks, Rik. Once again that could have been posted on idnets status page, tbh I never look at it as it always seems rather behind the times as to the genuine status anyway ;)

Good to know Steve. :thumb:
Problem returned tonight. Wonder why?
'An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 4.3.5 Server configuration problem. Please check the message recipient a.n.other@gmail.com and try again.'
I can't get it to work either :dunno: I've just turned password authorisation off/on and ssl on/off and still no go with any option.
It's seems to be working again
With or without authentication Steve? I can't get it to work at all.
[EDIT] Forget that, I just got it working without ::)
It's working with authorisation on or off at this moment in time.
