I am in the process of wiring the home up my router is in the sitting room......I ran a cat cable around that room and drilled a hole into the front room.... ok I have two pc,s running off that router
My question is above this room I want to wire the bedroom directly above this one is there a double type socket type thing which would allow me to use the 30 meter cable I have to just run the cable along the skirting up the wall through the cieling which would mean I could plug the bedroom PC in without running a cable from the router and up stairs taking up boards on landing and bedroom
I find it hard to believe that something like that isnt availabel but dont know how to google it
I have a netgear switch which has never been used but dount this would do it but in theory it should :dunno:
A David classic question I know but my medication is due soon
You can't double up two machines on one cable, David.
No I want to join two cable Rik sorry I wasnt clear
Here's what you are looking for David http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ehternet+cable+joiner&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&channel=fflb

You beat me to it. ;)
If only it was that quick to research errors via Google at work.
I swear it knows when I've got someone on the phone and I'm trying to look up an obscure error as it usually shoves up all the junk.
Google is perverse. ;D

Ah yes Mrs Slocombe
And a fine actress I did like Molly Sugden an underated actor in my book
Oh no I just realised I want a single into a double ! at least I know what Im looking for now
Then you need to use a switch or hub.
Thanks Glenn I have one in the cupboard never even knew what it was to be honest  ;D
You'll find searching easier if you search for cat5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable
The device you're after is a coupler.
Wouldn't it have been easier to use Homeplugs? Netgear does a blisteringly fast one with a four port switch. I tried it out, got over 80Mbs over it which is pretty impressive. It would have stayed buy Justina didn't like the cables dangling down the wall. My power sockets are about 1 meter off the ground for me to have easy access. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-XAVB5004-Powerline-4-Port-Theater/dp/B004I9IANS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1335685229&sr=8-2

As Glenn says, you need a switch for that job, David, you can't 'split' a network cable as you can a phone line.
I think I got the idea I am thinking now to mount the switch in this room and run the cable up through the ceiling and the switch will then serve both this room and the rooms directly above ?
Like this David
Switch
l----------- Upstairs computer
Router --------l
l----------- Downstairs computer
When we had out BT main socket moved by my my friendly BT engineer he ran the cable though the roof down into the study, then 'spit' the cable running back the voice to the spare socket in the lounge from the faceplate in the study. All very neat. £20 and munchies. :)

Thankfully since having everything renewed by Bt from the pole outside to the socket I wont be seeing any engineers until the FTTC is availabe which has been put back again :shake:

Oh I have one I just call up David, nice guy I went to school with, makes life dead handy for internal wiring jobs ;) If you get to know one and get his number they will sometimes do internal jobs off the books.
I am but a humble labourer Gary who knows no-one which such high level skills :(

You can't double up two machines on one cable, David.
You can Rik: Cat5 Economiser (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ethernet-Cable-Economiser-Kit/dp/B000Q6EC0C)
It's something of a kludge and not recommended for long-term use, and only works for 10/100Mbps.
I only found out about them the other day when I said the same as you :red:
Thanks, Bill, I'm always learning.
Apparently they've been around since year dot, but I hadn't heard of them either.
Very useful when you need a temporary second connection and running a cable isn't practicable- eg there's a wall in the way! But not for much else.
Don't forget to mount the switch somewhere with a bit of airflow David. Sometimes they generate a little heat if left on H24.
Thanks I will going to mount it under my desk with nothing else there to restrict airflow :thumb:

At the at price, it would be almost as cheap to by a 4 port switch. I was buying those four years back at about 10-20p each!
And Amazon are a LOT cheaper:
