Title: Laws rules and yet more
Post by: mervl on Apr 02, 2012, 13:09:54
I know we love being the most regulated nation on earth but does anyone else feel they're pushing it a bit with the new ASA rules on broadband promotion and the Government's apparent intention to introduce comprehensive electronic communication monitoring, all at ISPs (so consumers') expense?

What's the point? The biggest problem for many people (and not least those that would govern us) is information overload. If my speed estimate is 4Mbps as it was on ADSL - with everybody because of technological limitations, how does some estimate of the top 10% (and various other percentages) speed of the ISP make me feel better, or help my decision making; and since every terrorist post-mortem shows up that the information already available wasn't acted upon, why does more information help? I know that nosiness, especially when state-sponsored, is the national pastime but do we have to make it a legal requirement?

And doesn't it just make those horrid residential users too much bother for the smaller fry like the ISP many of readers of this forum might be signed-up to? I fail to see how that would add to consumer choice or improve quality, but may be I'm missing something! Still, rejoice that you can all now sleep more soundly in your beds.  :rant2:

Couldn't agree with you more, bad legislation and a complete failure to understand the underlying technology, something that Govts demonstrate on every major IT project.
