Title: Upgrading package and router - which first
Post by: petethegeek on Mar 30, 2012, 17:49:29
I've periodically been checking my local exchange on Sam Knows and found out this morning that it has finally made it into the 21st century. A quick call to idnet support confirms I can now upgrade to ADSL2+ with an expected speed of 17Mbps. (I can literally see the exchange from my home office window and my DG834G v4 currently shows 8128/448.)

Now, the aforementioned Netgear which has given sterling service over the years is starting to show its age and I have been promising myself a Billion 7800n as soon as the exchange was upgraded. My question therefore is; do I place the order for a line upgrade with idnet now taking the chance that it goes through before the new router arrives, or do I wait until I have the new router, install that and then place the upgrade order.

I suspect it probably doesn't make a blind bit of difference either way, but I'd be interested in hearing any opinions on the matter.

I'd order the router first, so that there are no issues when the line upgrades.

Get the router in your paws first, configure it and make sure it works, then place the 2+ order.

I am still using a trusty 2700hgv (latest version) should I stay with it or would I be better changing before Tuesday as My line will be updated then.  :D

I would carry on using the 2700 Den, mine was rock solid on ADSL2+.

Sounds reasonable to me, I'll try and wait patiently for the router to arrive. Thank you both for your advice.
