Title: Internet TV
Post by: Tacitus on Mar 08, 2012, 12:31:47
Does anyone know if there are any (relatively cheap) set-top boxes that will allow you to play iPlayer, 4oD etc through your TV?  I believe the X-Box will, but are there any that are purely 'adaptors' to allow internet streaming.  My Panasonic is not yet sufficiently old that I can justify it being binned in favour of one of the latest 'Smart' models.

I hoped the Apple TV would be updated sufficiently to allow you to put iPlayer etc on it, but alas no.  I know you can use AirPlay to stream from another machine but this strikes me as being a bit clunky.

All suggestions welcome - the ability to stream HD doesn't really matter as I struggle to get a reliable 2Mb connection :(

I have a WDTV Live - http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330 - which I use to stream media from my PC (and/or NAS). It will play literally any file type and has apps for iPlayer, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify amongst others with new online services being added all the time.

Looks OK.  The main use would be for iPlayer, 4oD and occasionally Ch5, streamed over the Internet

You can probably achieve what you want with some of the smart network enabled DVD/bluray players as well.

For what it's worth, I've got a Sony bluray player that cost me £117 from Play.com (came with Tron 2 free too, which is good as it's not worth more than that :D). This is constantly having updates too, so it's definitely supported and there is a vast array of options for entertainment, etc through it. I often watch iplayer on it. I think this bluray player has been replaced now with a newer model, but for the price it's amazing.

Do you have a Mac? (I'm assuming because of the section you're posting in)

I'd suggest Plex. Its a media centre where you can have a 4OD, iPlayer etc plugins.
