i cannot uninstall sim city / reinstall it let alone run it.

it wont run up an IE window either cos what comes up ? yes a bloody adobe acrobat window complaining about iexplore.exe not a supported file type.

:(

cant run any exe at all !

Have you got a restore point you could roll back to?

If not, can you open explorer? If so, click on Tools > Folder Options > File types, and see if you can see the file association, if you can, try restoring it to the default. Of course, it may have affected more than one file type. :(

It can prove very useful. :)

Did you manage to re-install the Sim City stuff?

Yeah i got Sim City re-installed. after rebooting the pc cos the .exe file was locked somehow and did not free up after resetting the file type properly it needed a reboot.

then the Rush Hour expansion pack.

and it had not deleted my saved cities so quite a result.

but with a lot of cussing and swearing i have to admit  ;)

That's called computing. :)

It's worth setting a restore point before installing any new software, just in case. It can prove to be a get out of jail free card.

Very, just find the System Restore utility (I have a shortcut to it on the desktop), fire it up and choose "Create a restore point". It will chunter for a few seconds, and that's it. If you need to restore, fire the utility up again, then choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time", select the restore point from the calendar and you're done. If you can't find Syestem restore in your menu structure (I don't know where it would be as I don't use XP menus) then use explorer to navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe.

Start
  All Programs
    Accessories
      System Tools
        System Restore

I use System Restore with a great deal of caution. I've seen it remove files and folders from the desktop so I'd be wary about using it other than for serious problems and even then I'd be inclined to do a backup first.

It does seem to have a habit of screwing up the desktop, doesn't it, Rob. :( OTOH, in a crisis, it might just recover a system, albeit with a slightly messy desktop. In an ideal world, everyone would use something like Acronis True Image regularly.
