Title: waiting...waiting....
Post by: Jovin on Jan 17, 2012, 19:10:59
Hi All
Recently when browsing the internet I have found that its sometimes very slow connecting to website. A message in the bottom left hand corner typically says "waiting for <website address>....". it makes no difference if I use Firefox, IE or Chrome. This seems to be getting worse and waiting time can be anything for 5 secs to a minute.
Speed testing seems fine with a result of around 7Mbps. Router is Draytek Vigor 2700VG and OS can be either XP pro or Win7 pro. PC is wired connection with a laptop connecting wirelessly, the laptop is also experiencing the same problem.

Any thoughts/sugegstions?

All sites you try or just one or two?

All sites randomly, sometimes a re-try of the same site will work straight away sometimes not. Later (minutes or hours again its random) everything will work fine.
This is something fairly new but its difficult to say when it started as it has only been getting worse slowly.

Try this

If you are using Windows XP:

Go to Start > Run and type cmd, then click OK

At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter

Windows should confirm that the cache has been flushed, click the X button to close the window.

If using Vista or 7:

Go to Start (Windows logo in a circle) > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click Command Prompt and left click on Run As Administrator

At the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter

Windows should confirm that the cache has been flushed, click the X button to lose the window.

Try again

Clearing Browser cache
If using Internet Explorer:

1. Go to Tools > Internet Options
2. Click Delete files under Temporary Internet Files or Delete under Delete Browsing History (depending on IE version)
3. If you clicked Delete under Delete Browsing History click Delete Files on the next screen that appears (If given multiple checkboxes untick everything apart from Temporary Internet Files and click Delete).
4. Click Close then OK.

For what is worth, I have been getting exactly the same problem. I was wondering whether to try another DNS provider?

Care to give some sites, and we can try them for you?

It has been all sorts of sites for me Rik. Common ones as well.

eg. www.bbc.co.uk/sport  which I have just tried and it is fine. But some times I see the same issues as the original post.

I'm not complaining, just one of those things I suppose, but I saw the original post and thought, yeah, that's been happening to me lately. Especially the bit about the site not responding, stopping the link, refreshing it and it comes back straight away.

If results are variable, there are several possibilities, congestion at the exchange or the server being the most likely. If you can post when you're having problems, we can test and see if it's widespread.

Could also be the DNS servers at the target sites responding lookups slowly, particularly if the sites are experiencing a traffic spike they are not used to.
