Title: LLU vs ADSL2+
Post by: delbois on Jan 02, 2012, 13:30:36
Happy New Year to you all.

I moved from ADSLMax to Home Lite LLU on Christmas Eve and immediately got a download connection speed of nearly 18mbps with an SNR Margin of around 6db.  Speed tests obtained results close to the expected maximum for the connection speed  :thumb:

A few hours later however the connection speed dropped to 12287kbps and has remained there ever since - the SNR margin has hovered around 21db with very little variation.  Downstream attenuation is sitting at 20db. Speed tests consistently achieve speeds in excess of 10mbps which I'm pleased with but I think the line is capable of 50% more.

I have monitored the line using Routerstats and the above figures have been rock solid for days with the SNR margin showing very little fluctuation and no dips or drop-outs.

Two questions:
1. Is there a training period with LLU? If not, could the line be adjusted to increase speed at the expense of a lower SNR Margin?

2. ADSL2+ became available at my exchange on 31st Dec- would it be feasible/advisable to move from LLU to ADSL2+ to take advantage of of the extra monthly download allowance (15gb instead of 10gb).  My preference would be to stick with the non-BT LLU service but the additional 5gb/mth download allowance would be very handy!

Thanks in advance
Del

With attn. at 20db, I would also expect a lot more of your line. On ADSL2+ my 27db line syncs at 15000 with a SNR margin at 6db.

Something local has caused the SNR margin to shoot up to that high level - I think you need to work out what that is before you move products otherwise it may just follow you....

Hi Del. My understanding was that the LLU package had the benefit of the ADSL2+ bandwidth allowance. Might be worth double checking what it says in your account area on the Idnet website.

As for the SNR, have you tried a simple reboot? It could be high because of some noise when sync was negotiated. Now that has cleared the SNR has increased.

If you have tried already, drop support a message tomorrow asking them to reset the noise margin. I think it's easy for them to do that on the LLU lines.

Thanks Lance.
I've tried keeping the router switched on for a few days and switching it off overnight (plus a few reboots) but the connection speed seems to be well and truly stuck.  l'll get in touch with Idnet Support tomorrow and post the outcome on the speed and bandwidth issues on the forum.  I had expected to get the ADSL2+ allowance but suspect this is not the case - my account shows the new package details with the old 10gb allowance).  Let's see   :fingers:
Cheers

I see you hadn't been welcomed with a karma, so that's now rectified, Del.  :welc: :karma:
