Title: TalkTalk insist they can offer me faster internet than IDNet - true?
Post by: page3 on Dec 15, 2011, 08:53:27
Hi all,

I currently have IDNet ADSLMax, on the Radnage exchange (2,283 properties, ADSL Max only, was Market 1 exchange until TalkTalk LLU).

Recently TalkTalk have LLU'd the exchange and are obviously looking for sign-ups.

They tell me they can offer far superior speeds to that of non-LLU IDNet, but I don't see how that is possible.

I currently get a cat's whisker off the maximum ADSL Max of 8mbps down, 448 up.

The Radnage exchange is not listed for any upgrade, of any kind, any time within the next zillion years.

Surely, without fibre I cannot expect to improve on these figures (except for upload if I move to a business package)?

LLU normally means the equipment would be supporting up to 24mb so you could, and likely would, sync faster. However, given it is talk talk can you be sure that your throughput will be anywhere ear your sync?!

Quite. I've done a lot of reading about TalkTalk, and none of it was good!

However, if it is simply their equipment in the CAB, without any SDSL/FTTC (etc etc) upgrade, wouldn't it still be only 8mbps, but possibly less contention. Currently I often get almost 8mbps down.

FYI they quote 11.6 Mbps.

???

TalkTalk may give you a higher sync with their LLU product however you've have to counter this with possible increased levels of contention, port throttling etc. Opal is a better bet for LLU (business side of TalkTalk) but you may or not get a suitable phone package. Don't forget to look at contract lengths as well.

Don't want to encourage people to move, but TalkTalk LLU is used by some smaller firms (in the same way as IDNet use the BT Wholesale network and Be/O2 LLU in some areas), and they are sometimes recommended as better. Again as IDNet can be more expensive than the cheapest BT packages, so the resellers are more expensive than the cheapest TT service. (Also Sky LLU unbundling might not be far behind, as they are active though they don't announce where in advance: and my experience of their backhaul network is that it's much more reliable than BTWholesale).

8mb is ADSL Max. 24mb is ADSL2+ as used by BT's 21cn network as well as LLU operators.

An update:

I have now moved my broadband to Vivaciti (TalkTalk LLU) and get 13mbps down/0.9mbps up (with no 6pm-10pm slowdown or peak/offpeak bandwidth seperation) so am very happy.

Stayed with IDNet for phone, as they seem competitive and reliable so no reason to change.

I'll be back if IDNet ever do a TalkTalk LLU product  :thumb:

I'm glad our exchange got ADSL2+ status, I get great speeds with IDNet, day and night, the only thing that does bug me a little is the peak and off peak times, having 140MB off peak is great, but I'm hardly likely to use nearly any of that due to the after midnight-6am off peak timing, although the 40GB peak is pretty good. I wish they would rethink the peak/offpeak times.

Thanks for the update, hope it continues well, perhaps keep an eye out for any signs of Be* LLU availability on your exchange as that's the current IDNet LLU link up.

Sounds good. If my exchange was not finally getting ASDL2+ this year, I'd probably sadly migrate also. But as it is, I can just manage the wait. :D
