I don't much care for Windows Live Mail, in particular the way that SkyDrive hijacks the sending of photos. It used to be so simple with XP and Outlook Express!
Suggestions please for a free alternative to use with an idnet.com account, bearing in mind that one recipient is a non-English speaking technophobe. I'd like the photos to appear in the email body so there's no need for him to download anything and no rubbish about "album" or "slideshow".
Thunderbird should do it.
Or Pegasus if you want to be very different. :)
I send photos all the time using Windows Live Mail. Dunno what Skydrive is :dunno:

Any photos you email using WLM are also uploaded/copied into cloud storage via Skydrive.
That's got her worried.
I still don't know who Skydrive is :dunno: and they're welcome to look at any of my photos as they're not worth looking at. ;D
Just looked up Skydrive and it applies to Windows Hotmail not the windows mail

It also integrates with each "Live" product, i.e Windows Live Mail.
QuoteSend pictures from Windows Live Mail
In Windows Live Mail, click Photo email on the Home tab, and then add the photos you want to share into the new message. Just like with Photo Gallery, when you click Send an album is created for you on SkyDrive. Your friends can view your photos in a slide show or simply download all of your photos with one click from the email message.
I'm using WinMail which is just similar to outlook express it doesn't say anything about Live so I might have got my wires crossed here. I would never use hotmail or anything else live unless it was junk mail I was sending.
Sounds like you're using Windows Mail which is part of Vista. If so then you're fine.
Thanks everyone! The trouble with SkyDrive (an integral part of Windows Live Mail) is that it insists on doing things its way and if you try to be clever and work around it then quite likely the photo doesn't get sent.
I'll be missing for a while, playing first with Thunderbird. How I'd manage without this forum I can't imagine.
I use windows live mail to send photo's, I do NOT have a hotmail account.
To overcome your problem, don't send the photo as "a photo" under live mail, send it as a file attachment.
Occam's Razor, eh. :thumb:
I had to look that one up Rik!
;D
It's worth remembering. ;)

When you remember it we automatically upload your thought to our cloud storage. If you need to access that memory again, just remember your 74 digit pass and the 23 digit registration number. Although, currently, your storage seems rather empty...
It all escaped when I sneezed, Ben. ;)

The trouble with that sparky is that the fiendish SkyDrive recognises the attached file as a photo (because it's a .jpg?) and again imposes its way of doing things.
What if you zip the photos, Dud?

Haven't tried Simon as the objective is to keep emailing as simple as possible. I'm in danger of becoming utterly befuddled with experimental emails going one way or the other so I'm taking a break after which I'll focus exclusively on Thunderbird. It looks promising but I'm having problems with adding accounts to it.
It tends to try to add accounts automatically, but I think you can also do it manually.
Give this a whirl, so very similar to outlook express.

With Thunderbird, you should be able to simply copy and paste photos into the body of the email you're composing.

I've tried both ways. Password for the accounts, which I've copied meticulously from the IDNet customer portal, doesn't seem to be recognised. Error message "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.idnet.com responded: Authentication failed." And I've tried pop3.idnet.com too.
Thunderbird suggests for outgoing server accountname-smtp.idnet.com (Default)
or smtp.idnet.net. Tried both, no joy. Incoming server mail.idnet.com. Other settings: Port 110 Connection security STARTTLS (but I've also tried none).
I'm satisfied that I can send and receive email, including with a photo, using Thunderbird and the first account I added (my most-used idnet.com account) which I specified as the default. Problem has now moved on to adding two less-used idnet.com accounts and getting them to work.

Thanks Sobranie. I can't cope with another programme right now but I'll try yours if I really can't succeed with Thunderbird.
Try turning authentication off, Dud. Also, you should be able to find the correct settings here, even if it doesn't show the current Thunderbird version:

Already says "No authentication" for Outgoing Server (SMTP).
Have studied settings over and over, giving up for now :'(
Sorry to hear that. I've only ever used Thunderbird with IDNet, and had no trouble. :/
You could forward all the mailboxes to the IDNet account, then simply set the reply to to the individual addresses...
And the winner is.........sobranie with eM Client! Set up and working OK in moments. Mind you, I had to ride roughshod over some rather scary warnings on the way. A karma coming :thumb:
Oooooooooo ......... ta muchly dw. :D
jftr I had the devil's own job trying to set up Thunderbird/idnet. Eventually manged to set things up manually, worked fine for a few weeks and then fell over.
I now use incredimail and am considering buying the full version thus dumping all the cheesy addons. If I do not decide to buy it then I'll sneak along to em Client as I still have an account with them.
I don't particularly remember, but I think Thunderbird tries to default something in the naming system. I hate any software that decides "it's/the programmers" way of doing things is best, and to top it off it's "automatically" done too. :(

IDNet settings are of course mail.idnet.com and smtp.idnet.com. Thunderbird automatically sticks something else in which louses up the works and it's luck of the draw if you can get the client to accept what you want (even on manual). I found quite a lot of people moaning about this on Google some time back.
I believe TB fell over after an update and I couldn't be arsed to try and fix it anymore.
I prefer not to email photos, unless they're of people that request them from me, then I used Outlook 2010. Otherwise I use flickr for hosting on my pro account, and limit who can see what. Much easier, and only costs something like £20 a year.
I was delighted with free eM Client for two whole days then I discovered that it's restricted to 2 email accounts and I wanted 4. Back to the keyboard!

After overnight reflection I realise that if I scrap one little-used idnet.com account I can use eM Client for the remaining two and my browser for a Hotmail account. So I won't be needing to delete the karma I awarded sobranie after all! (Just joking that last bit).
Or forward that email addy to another?
I'll find out how to do that, thanks Rik. Sorry I didn't get around to trying your suggestion of Pegasus by the way.
That's OK, it's very old-style, but very flexible.
