If I go to: http://gateway/xslt?PAGE=C_2_0 and scroll down there is a list of devices connected with MAC address and IP address.
Some devices will appear with their own "Name" such and Johns_Laptop, Janes_DeskPC &c. Against others is the ability to edit the names and change them from say "unknownE27DE0F23671" to "Cisco_48port_switch", but others have just the "unknown128B0D90A4E1" type name and lack the Edit name function ... Any ideas why? and how can I overcome it
Just a shot in the dark, but could they be old, no longer connected devices, and therefore, could they be removed? I seem to recall, however, one of my used 2700s had a device name from the previous user, and like hell could it be removed!

No, these are brand new. New hub with none listed then as I rebooted devices on the network they started to appear ... some with names, some with editable names and some that were just "unknown ..." and I recognise the MAC addresses so know what they are.
There was a bug when you couldn't edit if fusion etc were turned off on one firmware

I believe the name is obtained by the 2700 from the hostname presented in the dhcp request. Some devices send a hostname and some don't. I had a similar problem with my IP Phone, it was always shown as unknown(but editable) then suddenly after a firmware update it appeared as C475IP. Obviously the f/w update had changed the DHCP request.
