Title: Down loading videos
Post by: dudwell on Oct 15, 2011, 11:50:01
Not a problem - just a little puzzle:-

I've found that an easy way to download videos such as from Youtube or Dailymotion is to have RealPlayer installed and to play the video in IE8. Hovering the mouse arrow over the picture causes a RealPlayer "Download this video" tab to pop up and the rest is simple.

My new laptop came with both the ordinary IE8 and the 64-bit IE8 and I've found that the tab doesn't appear if playing the video in 64-bit IE8.

I'm nervous of up-dating to IE9 in case I should lose the facility.

Any thoughts? To repeat - it isn't a serious problem.

Gentlemen idnetters might like to use this video for experimental purposes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYZiENcnJqw  ;)

Not sure about IE, but an alternative is to use Firefox and the Video DownloaderHelper extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/).

We use this at work to obtain online videos people send to us.

If you're not keen on installing Firefox on to your system, there's a portable version (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) which you can install as a 'standalone' program so that it doesn't add any just to your registry etc. The folder can be just deleted to remove the program fully.

Plugins have to be written specifically for 64-bit IE and until RealNetworks release one you won't see the functionality in IE.

Adobe have just released a 64-bit Flash plugin for IE on Win 7 (not sure whether it'll work on Vista)
