Title: OCR software that properly recognises tables and graphics
Post by: pctech on Oct 13, 2011, 09:51:40
I am trying to scan in an application form (no point in me writing it as my handwriting is worse than a 1 year old) but it scans it in as an image and does not recognise tables etc (I really need it to be editable)

If I scan in as a PDF it appears almost perectly.

Alas no electronic copy in Word format is available.

I'm using Omnipage SE and have tried free trials of FoxTab and Nitro PDF but these do not work.

Within reason I am happy to purchase a package to do this (but not Adobe Acrobat)

I am using it with a consumer grade Canon LIDE 90 USB scanner.

Any tips.

Have you looked at PDFxChange, Mitch. Prices from £14.99.

I'm not sure what my father uses Mitch but whatever it is allows him to hand draw spreadsheets and tables etc which he then scans and it automatically opens them in Excel.

I'll phone him tonight and ask what he uses.

Thanks mate, only having to do this as am applying for a couple of jobs and they insist on app forms but don't seem to release electronic copies.

I may be wrong Mitch but I think this is what he uses - http://www.irislink.com/c2-1584-189/Readiris-12---OCR-Software-------Convert-your-Paper-Documents-into-Editable-Text-.aspx

I'll check with him tonight however.

I often use PDFxchange or whatever it is called (linked to by Rik) - the free version though.

That will let you type over the top of a non-editable PDF which sounds like a solution to your problem.
