Title: IOS5
Post by: Steve on Oct 12, 2011, 18:34:03
IOS 5 is out although it may be a while before it propagates to all iTunes regions, my impression is that you need the latest version of iTunes i.e. 10.5

Correct. My mate was telling me last night that it was out but I couldn't find it. When I installed 10.5 it then told me the update was available. I'm breaking my phone as we speak ;D

Got the iTunes update earlier.  Just waiting for iOS5 to come up now.  I hope it's good because I'll be giving up my Jailbreak for it.

I need to know if you can actually use your own custom message tones and alerts, not just ones you can buy from iTones.

Don't think you get custom SMS sounds.

It can't be hard to give that option though, you can have custom ringtones

You can, Mitch. It's one of the new features.

Yep, that killed my phone right nice. Restore, reinstall, restore, reinstall. It seems to be stuck in a loop and is now stuck restoring the apps. Ah I love these Apple updates.

Lots of reports on google of problems for those that 'successfully' installed it too. Hmm I may be buying an S2 sooner than planned :D

{edit} Oh wait, that threat seems to have kicked it into life. It's now restoring 16gb of music. Woo.

Oddly, it's just finished restoring and now it's using IOS5, despite telling me there was an error and forcing the restore. I have no idea what's happened but it's definitely IOS5 on it now ???

I'm just downloading iTunes 10.5 now so that I can get iOS 5 installed. I'll report back on progress later!

edit: just flicked back to iTunes and it is offering the iOS 5 upgrade so it looks like you don't need 10.5 after all.

I've no interest in IO5 but then I noticed the increase in packet loss on my TBBQM -

(http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-thumb/a43cd3f55b8c4fecdd13c04f18e66f32-12-10-2011.png) (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/a43cd3f55b8c4fecdd13c04f18e66f32-12-10-2011.html)

I wonder if it's a result of people rushing to download it?!?!?

I thought to myself earlier I wonder if the graphs will show the impact but couldn't be bothered to log in and check mine!

I'm in bed now so will try my update in the morning.

I managed to get the latest version of iTunes by checking for updates but I can't get iOS 5. Perhaps it's no longer available because of the overloaded servers?

[EDIT] OK after running some diagnostics it appears iTunes isn't able to sync with my iPhone even though it does it every time I charge the phone. Restarting the phone brought it up as a device in iTunes. I don't think I've ever seen that before

Anyway the update failed, I'll try again later.

Mine had updated overnight.
Title: Re: IOS5
Post by: psp83 on Oct 13, 2011, 08:15:19
The only issue I had since updating is missing apps, done a app restore through iTunes and got them back but had to put them into folders again.

Other than that and the errors I got because the server was busy, it went fine.

But it seems apple did this update different than the rest, it did a full restore/reset and then put the backups on your phone.

But I guess they had to do this because of the big changes in how iOS5 works (with updates over wifi etc)

Certainly it's busy I managed to move one Mobile Me account over earlier today but I've failed with the second account as the server is too busy.

My camera roll is there, but I've lost all other photo folders.  Luckily, I still have them on my PC.

It also reset my data settings, so I couldn't get mobile data this morning.

I don't like the Newsstand thing, which it seems you can't remove, and the Reminders app is basic at best.

Safari is much faster, though.

Early days, but 5/10 at the moment.

Now managed to get it installed on my Ipod, not a very good experience though with about 6 attempts to get the restore to work, thought I'd bricked it at one stage.  :eek4:

The iPhone was fine no issue at all. The iPad didn't entirely play fair but that was easily resolved from backup.

I don't own an iPhone so I've no idea if this is true but I read something this morning that said if you had iCloud enabled every photo you took with the device was automatically uploaded and you had no ability to delete it at all.

If that's true I can see a lot of people having somewhat embarrassing photos online with no way of deleting them.

I agree on the iPhone if photo stream is enabled upload is automatic there are other options for photo stream on the Mac where manual control options are allowed but with automatic you have to be very careful :eek4:

Yes they were Steve, but the backup got deleted, I have no idea what happened I had that error message everyone seemed to get, then it 'restored' iOS5  :dunno: all my events were kept but my camera roll vanished  :sigh: Managed a full backup over wifi last night...3hours over my slow adsl max line. iCloud can cause duplicates in calender as well  :shake: to many updates to quickly, oh and iPhoto got an update as well but if you are brave enough to use photo stream it seems to crash according to the forums. Saying that Lion 10.7.2 is much better.  ::)

I have logging in to the iCloud web page and grabbing information, emails etc from any location is very handy, so is find your iphone and the ability to remote lock/wipe it if you need to.

Not tried back up to iCloud yet I think I'll wait for the dust to settle. The transition from Mobile Me to iCloud seems to have gone OK for two accounts , time will tell.

I had to plug mine in last night after all the fuss Steve and it did it automatically  :) it only updates once a day when you are plugged in, the screen is locked and you are on wifi.

Yes, my calendar was a bit of a state after the upgrade.  It added times to all my repeating all day events, and I also had some duplicate entries.  Luckily, I'd taken a backup of the Outlook calendar before the upgrade.

Here's a related question - when you get an alert during a sync that the iPhone is about to change calendar entries on the PC, there seems no way to see what it's changing, so you either have to go ahead, or cancel the sync.  Next time, you just get the same alert again.  Is there any way round this?  Also, does the reminder app sync with Outlook tasks?

Nor do I Simon, I just use Mail and iCal. If you have clashes on the Mac it warns you in iCal and you can choose what to sync.

I quite like this update so far. Email seems better for a start, pulling in my hotmail account automatically, although I'm not sure how! There's a few simple things I like too, but my break just finished so I'm off!

Another dentist trip I the bag, so hopefully no more unwanted bills for the rest of the year!

What I did was do a manual backup before downloading iOS5. Then I updated to iOS5. It did its stuff. I lost apps etc.

But once everything was finished I pressed shift + restore and restored from the backup I took just before the update & everything was back to normal.

;D
