Title: My monitor is dying :(
Post by: D-Dan on Oct 11, 2011, 11:55:00
Every morning when I power up for the first time, instead of being presented with POST I'm presented with a blank, white screen (if left to warm up a few minutes it will work). After deliberating between a faulty gfx card and a faulty monitor, I've been able to borrow a monitor overnight and have confirmed that the fault is, indeed, the monitor (of course it is, they are more expensive to replace).

Anyhoo - just ordered this (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors/363817/hanns-g-hl231) before it gives up the ghost completely. Looks like quite a nice monitor for the price :)

Seems exceptionally good VFM, Steve.

The new monitor arrived this evening, a day ahead of schedule. Couple of things I'm surprised about:

The overall size and footprint is much lower than my previous monitor (22" Digimate compared with 23" Hanns G) - I was worried about this because I'm currently on a limited desk size (height as well) but at this rate I could probably go to 25"
Despite only a relatively small difference in resolution (1680 compared to 1920 horizontal) this feels like a million miles wider

On the downside

Factory settings have everything turned up to 100% - I'll be spending days calibrating to my needs and taste

However, the overall contrast ratio is much better, with much more defined shadows whilst not compromising on highlights. At the desktop the colours appear washed out, but photo and video are spot on, so I can only assume that the old monitor over saturated colours (or I chose over-saturated background images - time to re-render)

All in all, first impressions are very positive. If I can power up in the morning without a terrifying white screen I'll be happier :)

Sounds good, Steve. I've always re-calibrated monitors, they seem to be set up on the basis of how much room illumination they can provide.
