Title: Samsung set for top spot for smartphone sales
Post by: Simon on Jul 26, 2011, 22:15:09
Samsung may have leapfrogged Apple and Nokia in the smartphone market, according to research from Strategy Analytics.

Last week, it was revealed that Apple had surged past the ailing Nokia in the smartphone arena, and Samsung looks set to trump both rival manufactuers driven by a variety of handsets on the Android platform and a booming presence in emerging markets such as China.

According to a Bloomberg report, Strategy Analytics is predicting Samsung's second quarter smartphone sales to range between 18m and 21m, pushing it past Nokia's 16.7m handsets and rivalling Apple's 20.3m iPhones sold.

I'm not surprised, they seem to be really going for the smartphone market right now.

I'm half tempted to pay off my iPhone contract on Friday and get a smartphone based in android land. Although if I wait until my contract runs out in Feb there may be better hardware around. It's tempting though.

Between now and February is a long time in smartphone terms!

There will be about 25 new HTC's released in 6 months, or does it just seem that they release a new model each week?

Well, Nokia missed out on an opportunity in the market. Apple cornered the "standard" or "familiar" market. Nothing wrong with it. Just that, you can only have one. If it's a "standard". :P
So the other option for those behind Apple, is to go for the "choice" or "variety" end of the market. Samsung seem to have filled it nicely. If you want something simple, easy or stylish, you have Apple. For everything else there's Master... Samsung.

I expect Apple to have possibly 3 iPhone varieties available to buy or lease i.e 3GS , 4 and 5 the previous 2 being the low ram versions

True. But in general, the current model is the model they concentrate on. They have only one type. Like if Ford only made the Focus. You could still but old stock or models, but they would only have one car to the name.

I doubt the iPhone will be a grand. Apple keep prices similar, saying that if the iPhone 5 is just a dual cpu iPhone 4 I'll wait till 6 as I am happy with the 4 anyway, its been a great phone, and after checked out android phones, and Nokias I just like the simplicity, with ios5 and its new notification screen etc I think that will keep me happy, having had an HTC which when first turned on didn't even have a '|' symbol and then I had to look for new keyboard...that went back also the batterty was pathetic (main reason) the new dual cores are like toasters from reports as well, they run to hot as they have such powerful CPUs in tiny spaces. I just want a phone that does the things I do now, which the iPhone does well and with minimal effort, gone are the days of me wanting a million settings to play with...I have to accept my limits on new tech and being 'bothered' I have tried tio dislike Apple products and look at others but I like the 'it works' aspect still and I also need that as an aid due to other issues I am having.

I bought the cheapest Android, a Galaxy Europa, just before I left for the US 'cause my old phone wasn't quad band. Very impressed with the battery life so far, I expected it to be awful but it seems at least as good as my old dumbphone.
