Title: Best time of day to take down a connection to replace a microfilter?
Post by: pctech on Jul 17, 2011, 16:39:15
Despite Zen's best efforts it appears I've been struck by the blasted DLM and am down to 1.9 Mbps.

Have also been advised to replace the microfilter by others on TBB and the ADSL Nation one has been suggested, I've just placed an order for one but just wondered when is the best time of day to take the connection down to replace it when it arrives?

Early morning, Mitch, before noon.

Early morning, Mitch, before noon.

Make your mind up Rik, which is it early morning or before noon?  :eyebrow:

Well the filter arrived when I was heading out to work so will fit it later.

If you fit it now, Mitch, you may get slightly lower sync speeds but greater stability. To judge by the noise here, it shouldn't make a huge difference.

I fitted it about 10 last night and the sync fell to 2496 (I'd rebooted a couple of times the past day which was probably ill advised).

I removed power for an hour or so to reset the session and plugged it back in before I went to bed, noise margin is 7.4 now but attenuation is steady at 57.

Hopefully if it stays stable the sync will rise again, Zen have offered to get BT to look at the line but the guy am dealing with says he does not hold out much hope as his own line is in the 50s and he's on Zen's LLU kit in Rochdale.

Something's wrong, Mitch, I get 4.2M sync at 61db.

I've never plugged a phone into this line, noise on the line maybe?

Worth checking, Mitch.

I'll have a look later.

Then can go back to Zen as they now control the voice side too so hopefully can get BT to do the necessary (if anyone can)

You've got a bad line since you switched from IDNet.

It just made sense to put the line and BB under one roof.

If I had a pound for everyone that said it was nearly Christmas I'd probably have about 40 quid by now.

Just done a quiet line test and cant hear anything other than the normal buzz from the cordless phone which I get anyway.

Going to go back to Zen I think and ask if they can get BT to give the line the once over.

You are on ADSL2+ though aren't you Rik?

Although the router has been connected solidly for 45 hours it looks as though the noise margin is steadily rising.

Anyone seen this before?

Attenuation is steady at 57 and NM is bouncing between 7.4 and 7.6

Noise margin will change continuously depending on the noise conditions. If you see an increase it means that a noise source has disappeared or reduced. Noise is always greater in the evening so if you resync then you would expect the noise margin to be higher in the morning.

It just means you synced at a noisy time of day, Mitch.

still about 7.4 this morning.

If you want a higher sync, resync when the margin is at its highest.

Checked the NM this morning, 7.5 so resynced and got 2752  ;D
