Title: Windows Phone has gone from "very small to very small"
Post by: Simon on Jul 12, 2011, 23:42:09
CEO Steve Ballmer has admitted Windows Phone hasn't seen phenomenal growth, as he revealed a "report card" on Microsoft's business.

Speaking at the Worldwide Partner Conference, Ballmer discussed Microsoft's mobile strategy and gave details of sales of Windows, Office and more.

Windows Phone 7 launched last year, with phones released by several leading manufacturers, but a deal with Nokia has yet to deliver any handsets.

"Phones, we've gone from very small to very small, but it's been a heck of a year," Ballmer said. "And you're going to see a lot of progress in that market competitively as we move forward."

Well, they did 2 things right. Realise that a "mobile" device does not work with a PC style OS layout (I'm looking at you WindowsMobile 6!!!) and that not everyone has to copy "Apple".
However, I'm not sure if I liked the layout of the menus. The "edges" are just too hard and bleak in my opinion. However, I've not seen one used IRL, or on TV for that matter. Where as Apple seem to show the actual phone working in their adverts. Shock horror, Apple got something right for a change, we want to see the usability in an add, not have someone use buzzwords to convince use we need it.
(Not the MS advert, but as absent in actual demonstrations as every other add I've seen.)

IMO I think the Sony Playstation Portable had a better menu and OS.  :red:

I quite like the look of the Galaxy S2 (is that the right name?). It has a large screen, which is important to me.

All I want in a smart phone (other than your standard smartphone email, etc features):

Large screen
Decent phone camera (not like the AWFUL iphone one) to have a semi decent memory of a moment you couldn't take with your camera on a night out!
Battery life longer than 5 or 6 hours!
Not being tied down to software to manage your music/video/apps!

Most importantly GOOD SIGNAL RECEPTION.

Give me that, and I'll be a happy puppy.

I'm guessing you have a 3GS? The camera on the iPhone 4 is, as far as phone cameras go, is pretty good.

My Sony Ericsson W800 did everything I ever wanted (K500 too I think). My LG Viewty was ace. But, like you, I'm gob-smacked when "smart phones" lack the features I had in those normal phones!
