Have you come across Pinguy-OS (http://pinguy-os.sourceforge.net/) at all? It's based off Ubuntu, latest is 11.04. Comes with all the bells, whistles and codecs pre installed, just put it on the wife's laptop, can't fault it. Worth a look. :thumb:

@Ted - as it happens I am familiar with PinguyOS, though I use LMDE (LinuxMint Debian Edition), which I've migrated very much to debian testing since I installed (there is very little of Mint left), and I have to say I quite like my return to Debian. The first time I tried it was way back in the day running Debian 3.0 on M68K processor (Amiga to most people), and it's come a hell of a long way. I've been waiting with baited breath for the last couple of years for a full Debian desktop to reach a stage where it would become my primary OS, and that's exactly what LMDE did. Since I installed it's improved even more.
I still use Windows, though. Trying to start my own tax advice business, which relies heavily on standards so it was MSO 2003 at first (which didn't offer much that LibreOffice couldn't do, TBH), but I still found something lacking. MSO 2007, and specifically MS Access 2007 has filled a need I have, so for work I use Win, and for personal use I use LMDE.
There are huge advantages to this, of course, for someone like me that lives and works in front of my PC. It means that when I'm working I'm booted to a work environment. No vlc, TV etc. (though I do have an icecast radio player for background music), then at the end of the work day, I reboot to Linux and enjoy my computer :)
It certainly helps with my work discipline, though may ultimately be let down by the fact that my 3D work is done using Cinema 4D (Windows), and post video work is done in AfterEffects (Windows). I hate "Switch User" when I'm supposed to be working, now ;)

I have to say that Ubuntu is on a downward hill. I don't want Unity, and I'm not so sure that I want Gnome 3 just yet. I like my system just the way it is, fast and sleek, and set up to suit me, and not someone else's idea of what I should want (Apple, anyone?)
