Title: IPod I/O format
Post by: pctech on Jun 18, 2011, 11:19:38
Thought I'd ask here before venturing to the Apple Store where they will probably try and flog me a dock which I don't want.

I've got one of the 3rd Gen iPod Nano devices which connects to the PC and a JVC 'Boomblaster' powered woofer CD system (alas they don't make them anymore) via Apple's I/O connector.

Now the firmware works with the 3rd Gen and allows you to play/pause, ff etc from the JVC remote.

Now am looking at one of the current Nanos as I'd like a little more space (16GB rather than 8 I have currently). I'm not too fussed if I lose the remote facility but I wonder if Apple has changed the audio stream format, does anyone know if they have.

I don't, Mitch, but I'd be surprised if they had.

I'll go up the Apple Store next time I'm 'up the city', just need to drink plenty of coffee first.

Looks like they still make them but have changed the design quite a bit.

Mine has a cable that connects with a JVC proprietary connector at one end an Apple type connector at the other.

I'll admit I was quite tired the day I went up there for work but even if I had been wide awake I think they'd have been too hi-fi for me.

Well the Apple connector's not physically changed the only thing the could have changed is the pin outs and I doubt they have.

That's my thinking, Steve. There's too many people making products that use the connector for Apple to risk alienating them by changing things.

The only changes I've noticed is whether the dock supplies sufficient power to charge the iPhone/iPad, the device will complain it's incompatible but will still play audio it just won't charge
