Title: Security Software
Post by: net91 on Apr 14, 2011, 15:44:22
Hi

I'm thinking of switching from AVG Free Edition to either Microsoft Security Essentials or Bullguard Internet Security on my family's computers (all running Windows Vista SP2). MSE has the advantage that it's free, but Bullguard seems to have a good reputation for catching malware. Has anyone had experiences of either package?

Also, while at home, these computers sit behind my router's firewall, but a laptop is used on other public/friends Wi-Fi connections on occasion, does this increase the need for a third party software firewall?

I think MSE and Windows software firewall are a reasonable combination and should be adequate for most users. But there again I'm a Mac user so it's not a comment I have to live by.

I've used MSE for a while now and I'm very impressed. It integrates nicely into Windows and looks after itself without prompting the user to update every five minutes.

My experience of Bullguard a couple of years back was a lot of false positives.  It may well have improved since, though.
