Title: 404, Routing and Squirrels!
Post by: Desaan on Mar 26, 2011, 00:33:09
Since midnight, (coincidentally?) all pages outside the UK are 404'ing and those that are loading usually do so without loading pictures (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport as an example)

Anyone else having issues?  Also lost connectivity to any form of online gaming including the PSN. (Even took me a while to post this, 404's)

Same here, getting kind of tired as this seems to be happening more and more often.

Yep. Same here. I can get google but that's only because I use googles' DNS. I can get IP resolution in most cases, but not DNS resolution.

What broke?

I was playing Rift (EU Server) and downloading a game over STEAM when suddenly I lagged out of Rift, and my download stopped - but Ventirillo (UK server) continued to function. I could restart the download in STEAM, but I cannot browse a number of sites, and they do appear to be out side the UK, though BBC is also iffy in its response.

Guess I bugger of to bed and hope all is well in the light of day.

Yep having trouble accessing some sites, sourceforge for one.

This is getting annoying.

Is it a DNS issue? It doesn't seem like it because that wouldn't drop existing connections...

Ditto.  Disconnected just after midnight and since then web access is pretty much impossible :(

Probably a routing issue, a switch has gone out somewhere and looks like there is no backup in place to reroute the bounced traffic.  Which is my concern because this has been happening fairly frequently in the last few months, so if no re routing is taking place we have to wait 2-3 hours whilst somebody fixes it, which is totally unacceptable.  Either that or we are getting bounced through a node that's getting hammered and we get no traffic throughput anyway.

I could not even reach idnet from my mobile it said server not found, this is becoming far to regular  :( I really don't care whose fault it anymore but all I know is my neighbour is using the awful sky connect service but he keeps his service. It may be down to BT but its not hitting the bigger ISP's  :sigh:

Approaching 2hrs with no resolution.  Why is it always such a poor response time?  It's not like it's a major outage, I have friends on different ISP's on BT landlines who have no current issues.

Title: Re: 404, Routing and Squirrels!
Post by: silverblade on Mar 26, 2011, 01:46:21
The first place I check for any issues is:
http://www.idnet.net/support/status.jsp

...which claims there is currently a good service.

Presumably the status gets manually updated when a fault is acknowledged, but it would be nice to have some more realtime idea of what's going on without having to go visit a forum and hope it's not something at your end...

BT had a problem in the Stepney Green Exchange which houses the 21CN Metronode that serves IDNet in Telehouse. The problem has been resolved but we do not currently have any further information as to what the problem was.

Scheduled repairs? Seems funny how it happened at 1 in the morning. I understand it can be annoying, but at that time in the morning it's going to take more than 15 mins to get to the site and fix and server/line breakdowns.

Thanks, Simon.  We can only assume from the lack of further responses, that the issue is resolved.

The topology of BT's network makes Stepney Green a particular vulnerability. BT don't seem to believe in built-in redundancy, unless you work for them, of course.

I am also having problems, as I cannot access any of Microsoft's web sites including forums and Live. So something is still terribly wrong somewhere in the system.

I hope it gets sorted very soon as I want to reinstall my Windows Home Server as something has screwed up my Remote Access totally, despite it being configured manually in the router as per normal. It seemed to go pear-shaped about a week ago after an MS update. Without access to MS sites it will be impossible to carry out a re-installation successfully.

Talk of the devil, mines stopped working now, no access to msn, hotmail or messenger  ::) the joys of computing time to do Sunday type things and go out me thinks.

Edit: Using Norton DNS, messenger is working using my iPhone via a third party app though. MSN, hotmail fine via O2

Well if I can get to it via O2's network zap and using multiple DNS servers people cannot get to it via IDNet is that showing IDNet at fault? I just called my neighbour and he can get on fine via Sky's service  :dunno:

We were receiving the route to Microsoft via the Linx Route Servers. I've now disabled that peering in order to force the traffic through another route and that seems to have cleared it. I've opened a ticket with Microsoft to alert them.

Especially on the Brocade LAN (the Extreme LAN has had troubles too) - quite a few ISPs were grumbling about it at the recent IPv6 event at the London Transport Museum. We've seen Lonap as the most stable IX recently and so hats-off to them.

Until recently the network at work was largely based on Foundry BigIron switches and I can only remember the OS on them crashing twice but then again they didn't have to switch the amount of traffic LINX does.

I re-enabled peering a little while ago and have been monitoring traffic. All seems well today so I can only guess that whatever the problem was, they have fixed it.

Not every company has the IDNet approach to customer care Simon.

I bet you just got an auto responder thus fulfilling the LINX MoU requirement of a response.
