Title: Order Placed!
Post by: HidYn on Mar 15, 2011, 15:01:49
Like many of you I've been following the FTTC rollout in great anticipation. First it was due to be here on the 31st Dec then got pushed back to 30th Mar and I know if any of you are looking forward to it like I am you will have been gutted at the delay as-well. I check just out of the blue last Friday and suddenly I can get it!

I'm currently with Zen but have been meaning to move to IDNet for some time. So I grabbed my mac code and signed away my soul :)

Committed date is currently next Wednesday 23rd and I can't wait like a kid at Christmas!

My current speeds are around 2mb due to the exchange being miles away but my new shiny green cab is just down the road. They estimate I should get 34mb down and 8.6mb up so the difference is going to be huge for me!

My current router is a DrayTek 2820Vn which I hear is fine for Fibre due to the WAN2 port, Is this correct?

Anyway just thought I'd make my first post as an IDNet customer  :)

:welc: :karma: I hope you enjoy your new connection. My FTTC date has been pushed back 6 months to September, hopefully no later.

Awesome! This might be a silly question but as i've always been stuck downloading at 256kbps maximum what would I expect in them terms on 34mb down and also on the upload at 8mb?

Thanks again guys

Difficult to estimate, as yet we have little 'real world' experience to draw on, but I think you'll be happy with the results. :) Welcome to the forum: :welc: :karma:

Have you paced out the cable route?    Allow for the few metres between cabinets, distance up the pole, the length of catenary rather than straight and the drop wire to your house along with internal wiring and what do you get?    Nice to know what distances actually convert to in speed terms - there should be a reasonable correlation.

Then when the Tech arrives, ask him what the sync speed is,   and also what the maximum that the line can support.   Mine for example syncs at 39996 but would support around 46 Mb down and 17 Mb up.

Daft question again but is there a way to know exactly which Green Cab will be mine? There are a few near me you see.

If you have an overhead drop wire rather than being fed underground you can normally make a reasonable guess.   Your wire will go to a pole, then to another and maybe another and so on before then coming down the side of a pole to the ground.  that will give a reasonable indication which way you line is running and estimate.   It may double back and go around teh houses too but with a 34M extimate you are probably 300 to 400 metres away.
