Thanks Lance.

It was quite bad on Friday afternoon and just again this evening. I need to do some further investigations.

I don't think it is exchange contention as we are on a rural exchange with just one DSLAM. There are less than 1500 lines on the exchange and not all of them have ADSL.

Although the backhaul from the exchange might not be sufficient, or the exchange could feed into a larger exchange which itself is congested.

That's what I am afraid of  :-\

It's got a little better now:

What happened at 6am, JB?

Every morning from 6am - 6.35am my router is timed to switch off. This is to allow the router to resync with the DSLAM to negotiate the line parameters.

There is another reason, which I learned from bitter experience. Last time, whilst in Spain, BT had been doing some work. Unfortunately, the router didn't regain sync and I wasn't able to connect with home. Fortunately we were only away for one week. By rebooting the router once a day it overcomes this problem. As long as the PSU lasts out  :eek4:

BTW the performance is fine now. I think I'm going to try another ISP such as AAISP to try and eliminate exchange or backhaul congestion at peak times.

Edit: You can also see my off peak download just after midnight.

We can indeed.
