Title: Windows 7 Security advice sought
Post by: sparky on Mar 03, 2011, 12:54:49
Greetings folks,

I thought that I would seek some advice on internet security. I have read various reviews on this forum regarding peoples likes and dislikes of various Internet Security Suites and Anti-Virus packages and I have today read many conflicting reports on the t'internet. So here goes,

Until 2 days ago I was running Vista with Kasperski Internet security. I have used Kasperski for a while now (I know some people will scream in horror at the thought) but found that it just worked. However it does seem to have gotten rather complex and bloated with the current release although it seems to have its good points what with the virtual keyboard and secure internet connections to banking sites etc.

I have now done a clean install of Windows 7 on a new disk and reformatted my old disk and partitioned it to give me two data disks. W7 seems to be flying. I have for the moment installed Microsoft Security Essentials, the W7 firewall is on and I am hard wired to a modem router, Speedtouch 585. I have UAC on in as much as both myself and my wifes accounts are Standard User only, there is a seperate unused account which has full administrator priviliges. Neither of us would be inclined to visit the more dodgy websites and I am always carefull about downloads and where I get them from.

I do use the PC for quite a lot of online banking and business related tasks.

So, what is my security like?  Should I revert to my trusted Kasperski or is the general concensus that I should be OK as I am?

Thanks for any input...............

(Please, no suggestions that the best security would be to removed Windows 7   ;D )

I use MSE and it's been perfect for me. Integrates itself into W7 and doesn't pop up every 5 minutes asking you to update something or install a new version like some offerings.

I have just got a new pc (yesterday) and have installed (Weboot) cant say if it will save me from the nasty piece of Malware I was attacked by last week but it seems to have intergrated well with Windows 7

I'm a die-hard NOD fan, Sparky, but no package is perfect and MSE does a good job, so stay with it.

Thanks guys.

Perhaps I should say that I wasn't particularly asking for recommendations of products, more the level of security required?

I doubt there will ever be the "perfect" security package, they will always have their own flaws.
