what do you use for this.something what gives options,even just basic ones, to print photos in different layouts, like say passport photos on one sheet or multi photos on the same sheet.
Ive just realised I dont have anything decent-ish.I have a very basic program that was with my printer but its rubbish really, Irfanview which is just good for editing really unless ive missed some thing in it, last time I needed one I used a program that was with a camera I had years ago,it was an olympus camera and I think the software was Camedia but I cant find the disc at the moment.
It was good enough for what I needed but wondered if there are any decent ones to look at

Have you got any photo printing software with your printer? Baz, the software that came with my Canon printer will print Passport/ID sized photos.
Passport photo from onthegosoft works very well.

Epson printer Ray and it came with Easy Photo Print,but its very basic, havent had a proper look at it but couldnt find that option.

Windows will do this as standard. (Certainly Vista and 7, not sure about XP)
Use explorer to browse to the folder containing the photos and select print at the top. It then allows you to select layouts and multiple photos per page etc..
No XP doesnt do that.

Yes, XP does indeed do what Griff's links says. To get the left pane options, you have to browse to the folder from My Computer, not Windows Explorer.
You can also browse to the folder via Windows Explorer (which does not give the left pane), select one or more images within the folder and then right click to get a context menu. One of the menu options is Print.
Free software that gives the option to print multiple images (as a "contact sheet" with full flexibility over the image size but images must be the same size as each other) includes FastStone.
Of all the paid software I have, the most powerful, flexible and easy to use is Paint Shop Pro 7. With that, you can set ppi (dpi) on each image independently and then drag one or more images onto a page layout. That way, you can print multiple images per page whether or not you want them the same size.
Photoshop can also print multiple images per page but, as is often the case with Photoshop, the interface to do it is hard to find, clumsy and difficult to use.
ACDSee can also make "contact sheets".

That Faststone seems a decent program,its very ' busy ' in the main page layout though but it seems a long way round to do a simple thing like change the print layout you want.
Make a contact sheet,save it,open it up again,alter to how you want(I didnt get this far) then print??? is that right.
I just want to have some different layout options to choose from,select the pictures to include then print
I agree, Baz, Faststone is a busy looking interface. You need to get the contact layout as you want before you save and print.
I think the thing that comes closest to what you describe, predefined layouts, is the functionality built into Windows, as in Griff's link. But only if you want one of those particular layouts!
If you think the FastStone method is a long way round, you would love Photoshop (not). There are two methods I know of in Photoshop and both of them are complicated.
By far the easiest and most flexible is Paint Shop Pro 7. It is the only thing I use for printing multiple images on a page because it is so easy to use. Just size the required images by dpi and then drag whatever you want onto a blank page and arrange them by dragging. Trouble is, you can no longer buy PSP 7.

If you've got a digital camera and havent got Picasa youre missing out. This free app helps you organize all your pics, do simple touch up (crop/red eye/anti-tilt etc), will print contact sheets and will even group pictures together using face recognition!

If you need more editing than Picasa can provide then paint.net is also fab. Many of the features of the bigger much more expensive photoshop can be found here like layers etc. Great app
