Title: TowerUp: UK 2G/3G Mobile Broadband Reception Checker
Post by: zebrum on Dec 03, 2010, 00:29:23
The TowerUp reception checker tool allows you to find out if your new mobile phone is going to work before buying it and signing a contract. It also lets you see which provider will give you the best reception in the places you go.

I tried my Post code in their checker and it gives this :

QuoteO2              No signal   15.07 kilometers
   Vodafone   No signal   15.17 kilometers
   T-Mobile   No signal   45.87 kilometers
   3              No signal   15.18 kilometers

The map also shows the "nearest tower" ..... which is totally wrong.

I have had 3G reception since 2005 at this location and my new phone is on GPRS.

Tried mine and the info was spot on showing where the masts are and the fact O2 is poo where I live.

Very useful :thumb:

It's been suggested that I get a 3G dongle for those occasions when BT play up, so it's saved me some money:

   O2   Poor   1.41 kilometers
   Vodafone   Poor   1.42 kilometers
   T-Mobile   Poor   1.41 kilometers
   3   Poor   1.43 kilometers

My results were pretty accurate.  Not a great signal where I live, but excellent 3G and 2G half a mile down the road.

I tried my postcode and it said O2 no signal, which is absolutely ridiculous as I can O2 indoors or outdoors without any problems whatsoever with a strong signal. I fact when I moved here 5 years ago the only providers that had coverage was O2 and Vodaphone.

That is like mine, I have a repeater station just up the road and there are several new masts in the Purbeck area, 3G has been fine here for 5 years.

Same for my area, also says weak or no signal for all providers on 2G and 3G, yet I get a good signal on both on my T mobile phone.

Hmm, this site is newly registered so it may be the data is as yet incomplete, looking at the registration details we see this :

QuoteRelevant dates:
           Registered on: 27-Nov-2010

Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.

But on the web page we have this :

QuoteTowerUp is brought to you by Dynamically Loaded Ltd. - a worldwide leader in cell ID and WiFi location data. TowerUp is powered by Nearify, a location based service framework.

Following the link to Dynamically Loaded we find it is a trading organisation providing business services.......

I suppose an individual can register a domain and let a business use it? Might be worth passing on to Nominet, though, Dorset.

Its not very accurate for me. Says poor service all round yet right now I've got full signal on Vodafone and O2 was usually either 4 or 5 bars.

Not too sure Rik but it seems totally wrong to me that a site that is clearly an integral part of a business can be registered as " a non trading individual".

That's why I was thinking of passing the info to Nominet, let them decide whether it's acceptable.

I thought we'd been over this recently with another similar website , it was discussed that mobile phone companies had stopped giving accurate data regarding mast location a few years ago.

A response has been received already, Nominet have investigated the query and have served notice upon both registrant and registrar that they must amend the details to meet their criteria , or Nominet will change the entry themselves.

It would be contravening the Nominet registrant agreement if they are in fact a business.

Good for them.

I know of another site that is doing the same.

When you only have two masts in your area its not hard for them to get wrong obviously. Saying that O2 said I should get good 3G coverage in my area, when my O2 mast is 3.6km away   ::) I get 2g not even Edge, so even the big boys get it wrong

It was correct about 1 thing though.

I used to use Virgin which ran on T-mobile and the reception was very poor where I live and still is it seems.

As remember Orange opened their flagship new design store here so they obviously attach some importance to MK.

Maybe because we have a high proportion of yoof here.

Just adding a note that Towerup doesn't seem to be in operation anymore, while I understand the moderation team might want to keep the thread for historical purposes as it does contain some excellent witty comment from the late, great Rik the domain could be acquired by someone else in time and linked to content not related.
