Title: Really slow speeds for a few days now
Post by: tommouk79 on Nov 07, 2010, 13:45:20
Hi Guys and Girls,

First post here so go easy on me :)

Since I joined IDnet in February I've never had a problem with the service and had always been able to download as fast as my line would allow but since Thursday afternoon I've been getting really slow speeds. Youtube and IPlayer are buffering every few seconds, web pages are taking ages to load up and online gaming is very hit and miss.

I've tried resetting my router several times, swapping out the microfilters for new ones and even new a modem cable but speed tests always report between 200 and 500 kbps

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1020665742.png) (http://www.speedtest.net) and

Download  Speed
236 Kbps

0 Kbps   7150 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 236 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

I'm not to good when it comes to the internet side of things so any help or suggestions as to solutions would be very welcome

Thanks

John

Hi John, welcome to the forum. Can you tell us what router you have please?  It would be useful to get some stats from the router system to see what is happening.

Are you able to get your line stats from your router?

How are you connected to the router i.e are you using WiFi?

Everything is connected via wired connection, only use the WiFi for phones and ipod etc

Hi John

Welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

Your profile suggests that you are getting really low-speed sync events. Tell me a bit about your phone wiring, do you have multiple extensions, what devices are connected to the line? I'm not a big fan of Belkin routers myself, so if you can borrow an alternative model, that might give a clue as to whether it's a router issue. How do you connect the router to the phone socket, eg are you using an extension?

It could be that with changes of filters etc that whatever the cause of your low sync event was has now gone. Hopefully your profile will recover within a few days but BT's systems can take up to 5 days. All you can do now is keep sync and give th router 5 days uptime.

Unfortunately I don't have another router to test at the minute.

As for the phone lines we've got the main socket that's fitted with an ADSL-Nation filtered faceplate which I've removed and tried other filters via the test socket. Due to the weird layout of of my house and no power points near to the main socket I've got a 15m RJ-11 to RJ-11 cable going from the socket to the router, then there's an extension from the socket to the front room for the phone but I've also unplugged that and tested but there's no change.

Could you run a mains extension lead to the main socket and then test there for 24 hours?

Am I missing something here? You can't get higher than a 7150 profile on adslmax

The throughput suggests there's been a lower profile, Steve, but you're right, it shouldn't be that low now, so it will be a case of test socket and start diagnosing why.

Nope you're right Steve. I misread tue BT speedtest. In that case it looks like it could be wireless interference, other issues on the pc or possibly even someone else helping themselves to the connection.

It's a wired connection, I think unless the routers failing it's a BT problem via support.

I'll see if I can pick up another router to test in the morning and look at moving the router nearer the main socket, though space and the need for a  longer Ethernet cable to connect to my computer might not work
