Title: Where to buy CAT6 cabling?
Post by: mrapoc on Nov 06, 2010, 11:33:50
I haven't really seen much of it at all on popular E-tailors

Been thinking about gigabitting my network :P

Also my homeplugs seems to give random lag spikes (not good for games but I suspect perfectly fine for anything else!)

Probably down to data being transmitted along with electricity - bound to be some interference

Maplin will certainly stock it, Sam, and I suspect Screwfix do too.

Wonder how much it will be - I mean I can probably get the router mounted a bit closer to upstairs but I'd still need at least about 20m to get to my room :P

Excellent :)

Thats not a bad price and a colour which would keep mum happy if she spotted it  8-)

So my setup then would be

DNG2000 router > cat6 up to room > Netgear gigabit switch > (id need to get some smaller cat6 cables for this bit) PC, PS3 and anything else

I could then setup the homeplugs to serve the downstairs TV streaming from the PC (whilst the ps3 is upstairs)

Shame I still haven't found a use for these three 24 port gigabit switches I acquired from work experience (HP procurve)

We shall see if there are still speed problems and potentially implement them where needed but even then the only bottleneck should be the homeplugs rated at 200mbps, but this will only be used for the tv

Any difference between the one linked by glenn and this one

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/utp-cat6-cable-20m-cat6-rj45-rj45-straight-n45

Other than the snag free clip and its not Scan OEM?

In theory at least, there should be none, Sam.

The cables 'should' be made to the same spec.

Cool

Well i'm going to talk it over with Dad and decide the best length for the job. We need to effectively make it invisible so I need enough length to tuck it under the carpet up the stairs and across the landing  :P cheeeeeers!

Provided you keep below 100m per segment, Sam, you'll be fine.

You see, they know I'm right, they're both giving less than 100m. ;D TBH, I'd always keep below 50m myself.

Search for the Cat6 spec, some sites say 220m.

They're the very dim ones. ;D You'd have to have a big house to need that, though...

do you already have a network in place ?

as if it's using Cat5e cabling just upgrade the network hardware and use the existing cabling
