Title: Extension Bell
Post by: old john on Oct 22, 2010, 15:49:19
I have a loud BT extension bell connected by way of a microfilter and splitter to my master socket. I have always assumed that removing the bell wire to increase connection speed would disable the bell. Can anyone confirm whether my supposition is correct?

I'm guessing yes, John, because the bell probably need a ring current, whilst most modern phones don't. OTOH, the ADSL filters are meant to produce a ring current, so it would be worth experimenting.

The microfilter effectively reinstates the bell wire locally, so removal of the bell wire from terminal 3 on all LJUs will not stop the bell operating.

Yup, just as your phones still ring without the bell wire. Causes a lot of confusion, I well remember the BT engineer coming here and spluttering " but you can't do that the phones can't ring without that circuit....... "  ::) ::)

There was a master and 3 extensions when we moved in,I had pulled the ring wire in the first week of being here , the guy was stunned when I showed him that the phones did indeed ring.
